I recently purchased my first rod building kit which contains Flexcoat epoxy and finish, both with syringes. The syringes included with the epoxy had caps, but the ones with the finish did not. The finish instructions say not to clean the syringes and suggests just leaving the material in them. If meant to be left inside the syringes, wouldn't caps be a good idea to protect from accidental plu

I think you will probably say it doesn't really matter, but I would appreciate hearing your opinions anyway. I have a guide nearest to the female ferrule on the tip section of the blank whose foot measures 1 7/8" from the ferrule opening. The male ferrule goes into the female ferrule also 1 7/8". My initial feeling is that I should simply make one large wrap that covers both the

Working on my first rod and am at the stage where I've filed down the guide feet to create a nice ramp for the thread. After filing, I used some fine emory cloth to polish them. Although better looking, I am wondering if there is a better way, or another step, that will remove the fine scratches that still remain. Should they appear under the thread wraps and finish, I'd like them to look truly &

Have you tried going to Batson's web site for the info? Here's what their PDF catalog states: RX8+ This is our “state of the art” material. The foundation is a “High Modulus / High Strain Rate” fi ber combined with a carbon fi ber scrim. A new space age resin system coupled with a proprietary carbon fi ber reinforcement technique makes this a cutting edge graphite material. Blank

Mick, thanks for the explaination. So the key, especially when using a motor, is applying finish in thin coats to avoid the possibility of sags and bulges. If done in this manner, would drying by motor then be as good as hand turning?

I am just about ready to begin my first rod and would love to know how hand turning can be any different than turning slowly by motor. I can think of no logical reason - turning is turning. Someone please explain.

I'm about ready to order my first rod building kit which comes with FlexCoat finish/adhesives. I would like to use a color preserver (which is not included) for the wraps but cannot find one made by FlexCoat available from where I am ordering, but they do offer both Trondak and Gudebrod CP. Can anyone tell me if there is any problem with using a color preserver made by either of those two comp

Chris said he wants to build a 4 piece 7' 6" or 7' 9" 3wt fly rod and many of you have suggested Forecast. I would like to build a similar rod and looked at Forecast's offering and all they offer is a 2 piece 3 wgt.. Tiger Eye is the only company I've found who offers 3 wgts in more than two pieces. I contacted Batson directly and they said they'll give some thought to a 3 or 4 piece

Thank you all for your replies, and a special thank you to Cliff for digging up all those links for me. I have been educated! I have not yet built a rod and am in the "pre-build" stage of acquiring knowledge and answering questions to help me decide what to order and minimize problems during the build. Without a doubt, Rodbond is the choice of pros and, thus, what I will use as well.

I was in Home Depot today looking at their adhesives and noticed that the same company that makes PC7 also makes a PC12 which is labeled as their "Marine" version of PC7. Has anyone tried PC12? Being oriented towards marine use, I would guess that it might be appropriate for rod building as well since reel seats get dunked frequently while releasing fish, rain, etc.. Any thoughts

I've been looking for a 3 or 4 piece moderate to moderately fast 3 weight blank and have found that Tiger Eye seems to be the only brand which offers one. I can't seem to find much info on the brand and was wondering if anyone can tell me more about them. How do they compare in quality to the other brands out there? I have also seen "Tiger Eye" mentioned in descriptions in relatio

I have yet to build my first rod and am in the "research" phase. My interest at this point lies in building a 3 weight fly rod, ultimately the Sage TXL, after building a "first rod" to practice on. I read about oversizing the guides, guides made of titanium, chrome, cermet, ceramic, silicon carbide, snake vs. ring, single foot vs. two foot, etc. etc. How does someone with my

. . . Talon Blanks? Trying to get familiar with what all is available before I begin my first rod and was wondering about Talon. Stumbled into their web site, which seems like they don't update much. The last date mentioned on the site is 1998. How are they compared to, say, Batson products, which seem very popular? Thanks!
