I've been given the task of restoring a very old rod. The man loves it so much he wants to keep the original guides, grips, seat, and butt etc.. He justs wants the blank refinished (any way I want to) because...it was in a fire. There does not appear to be any damage from the fire other than all the epoxy scorched, bubbled, and a bit melted. I've managed to easily remove all the guides, thread a

I have a raw fiberglass blank and would like to paint it glossy black. Should I prime it first? What is the best type of primer/paint to use? I have an airbrush, so that is an option. Does it matter if the paint is matte or glossy, since it will be clearcoated eventually? Do I need to clearcoat the paint before whipping? If so, can I use my airbrush for that too? Thanks. Jonathan

Hi gang, When applying heat to a blank what would be the approx maximum temperature before doing damage to a Graphite blank and a fiberglass blank. The reason I'm asking is that I thinking of painting a blank with POWDER PAINTS. Instructions say surface should be heated to approx 325 degrees F for 15 mins. If a blank can be heated to that temperature without harming it I want to try applying

Hey guys, I know this thread was brought up recently, but this is a little different. I found some color changing paint-- Dupli color Mirage. It comes in three different spray cans (base coat, mid coat, top coat) and I was wondering if anybody has used this? I am definitely going to experiment with this tomorrow, but should I put anything over the top coat to prevent cracking? Any help is gr

I did a search on this subject without much success, but when I did a search on Perma Gloss, my computer almost overloaded! However, I did not find a consensus of opinion on my particular questions. This blank I just got has no finish whatsoever on it and it doesn't look very appealing as is, so I want to gloss it up a bit. From all the posts on Perma Gloss and all the problems some have had w

A friend has asked me to refinish an old Garcia fiberglass fly rod that he has had since he was a kid. It has sentimental value and he would like to continue using it. Replacing the cork, reel seat, and guides will be no problem, however, my question has to do with refinishing the blank itself. It's scarred and marred. My friend would like these blemishes removed as much as possible. I was t

I have an older rod. The label states Heddon Tubular Fiberglass 8'6". It is gold in color and a 2 pc. I like the feel of this rod and I'm making an attempt at rebuilding it. The guides and thread came off very easily. I like the color but I don't think I'll be able to save it because their is so much epoxy left behind. The wraps were really long so I can't cover it with new wraps. I w

I just received by new "Slate" Loomis blank (the old IMX's replacement) and in my opinion it is a singualarly ugly matte charcoal grey (I liked the old unfinished IMX). I have saved all the threads on painting blanks and it looks like its time to give it a try (first on a cheaper blank, of course). I assume most people coat the whole rod first and then wrap and finish the wraps. Is this

I am refinishing an old glass rod which has a blank that was painted white. It is a Harnell rod but I believe it was made by H & I. The paint is chipped away in several spots exposing a dark brown blank underneath. I would like to touch up the chipped away spots, then give the whole rod a very thin coat of Clemens Crystal Coat. Clemens used to sell this pigment stuff that you could mix in
