I've always started with 2 wraps of mesh tape on the blank. Slap some rod bond on, then continue wraping the mesh tape on. When complete, I put 6, or7 wraps of thread to secure. There is no need to tie off the thread, as the glue holds it in place.

I would also go with Dan Craft. How about a FTL 803-6, & drop the butt section?

Tom, what I'm saying is (for example} . If I go into a flyshop to buy a reel. the counter person will answer all my questions, & whatnot to make a sale. That would also go for hooks,& other cheap items. Would that not take a lot more time, than packing my order? In my youth, I worked as a shipper receiver for many years. I Know how long it takes, Ross

Something that has always bothered me. Why is there a difference? If I order online, I'm expected to pay the cost of picking my order as part of the shippng charge. Packaging material costs starts, lets say at a buck. If I shop in person, the counter persons time is free.

Sorry for my mis-information. Did a Yahoo search for Neals Fishing Products, & it states what I had wrote, on the search results. No harm intended, & best wishes Ross

Jake. i use small strips of masking tape all the time. If your guides are moving as your thread starts it's climb on the foot, it tells me you need to do more guide prep. Knock the leading edge down so the thread climbs more easily.

If I was in a tackle shop, which also housed a fellow rodbuilder. I would ask the maker of the drips. lol. Next time your there, ask for a tour of his set up.

Rob. For cutting a graphite blank, a dremel with a cutting disc works great. Apply a strip of masking tape to the edge of where you will cut. Remember a little goes a long way.. Also wear eye protection.

First thing when turning by hand, is to let the rod sit for a couple of minutes. Wick off the finish that sags to the bottom. Turn 180 deg, & repeat.

Pete. Your drill probably needs only a simple fix. Most likely your brushes have worn out. Contact the supplier, & see if he can supply a set. ( their cheap ) They are easy to replace yourself. Another option is to take it to a rewind shop. I use power tools lot's, & have changed quite a few after they squeal.

I only build fly rods,& wouldn't think of putting a hook keeper on anything less than a 10ft rod. Reason, leaders should be min. 9ft, & I hate having to pull my leader connection through the tip top more than once. It's much easier to wrap the leader once around the reel, & hook your fly into a guide. Ross

I love my Sig III 8ft 2wt. Although I didn't build it to be super light( full wells grip & A5 reel seat ) It weighs out at 2.42oz.

Hi Greg. A winding check is only put there for cosmetic reasons. If needed you can always build up a ramp with epoxy, or thread. I only build fly rods, & build them without hook keepers. My leaders are always much longer than the hook keeper. I wrap my leader around the reel, & clip on a guide.

Thanks for the replies,& offer Eric. To much work, & laziness got the better of me. I'll do a test wrap, as I have the thread on hand.

Next up on my bench, is a Dan Craft FTL 803-5. A search usually answers my question, but not this time. What I'm trying to achive is a ferrule wrap that closely matches the matte colour. If I use pewter thread without CP, will my end result be close ( probably lighter}? I know I could do a test wrap, but I'm hoping someone will have the answer. Thanks Ross ps. I don't have silk.

Bill. I'm no expert at this, but my view is a 12ft for lead core line is way too long. When I'm trolling lead line, my go to rod is 7ft.

I wouldn't be so sure yet. Somewhere it will probably say " or alter in any way " . Removing it from the cue to put on a rod for resale, would kind of reflect this.

When I first started building rods, I assumed that for a proper finish I would need a rod turner. My rotissary motor turned at 2 rpm. To speed this up (8rpm), I used a 2 1/2" leader spool mounted on the shaft to the motor. On a lower fixed shaft, I mounted a free turning thread spool. I only build fly rods, & the reel seat is always the last to be mounted. The blank sits between both

Much like Mike & john, I prefer hand turning. I turned the rods 8rpm, but feel I get a much better finish turning by hand.

My dental pic. Works great for packing threads, & pulling the thread through your ty-off loop.

Tony I have gone through this also with one of Jacks kits. If you can see the actual movement, that means the male end must be shortened so it goes further into the female end. Wrap with masking tape, & using your dremal cut-off wheel remove 1/16'' at a time. Having just started building in Jan. , I never thought I'd be answering one of your questions. lol

had this same problem on another fish forum website i frequent. it was decided that for a small yearly fee (which was well supported), you would become a paid suscriber with advanced options. for the non paying member nothing would change. the end result was a new, faster loading website. for the wealth of information that this site brings, i would have no problem supporting it. ross
