Bill,
I appreciate that suggestion, however, I am more traditional in terms of aesthetics and prefer the looks of conventional snake guides on a fly rod. I was looking for alternatives to the Batson recipe for guide sizing, the just seemed too big with all the a 5, 4's and 3's, I am no one to judge the engineering behind that formula, it just looked odd. I can save some wight by using the Reco

Tom,
Thanks for the info, that just seems more logical than extra metal, thread, and finish.

I am building a 8'-6" 5 weight Rainshadow RX-7. Looking at the guide sizes and spacing chart from Batson it seems that the guides called for are sort of large, 12mm stripper down to (4) size 3 snakes. Does anyone have experience with this blank and guide combination? I will be using REC Recoil or H&H Titanium snakes, if that matters. The reason I am questioning this I was lead to believ

Robbie,
Thank you, that is exactly what I'll do. I will use the same colors or as close to each other as possible. I have 2 different finishes on order to try, as well as 3 each of 3 different companies snake guides (H&H, Recoil, and Snake).
Thanks
Frank

Robbie,
Thank you that clears up most of what I was asking. Just so I am understanding this correctly, all else being equal, silk will give a slightly better looking and stronger end result? Also, you mention "stretch" is that a positive or negative, or just different?
Thanks
Frank

I have a question on guide wrapping materials. I am going to build a fly rod and was wondering what if any (other than cost) are the practical differences between silk and nylon. Secondly, is there a chart available that makes it easy to understand the size designations used in silk (i.e., #50, #100, 3/0, etc.) and that used for nylon, size A for example.
Thanks

8. Winston Rods
Can anyone tell me who makes the reel seats used on Winston factory rods? The one I am talking about is the Nickel Silver Up-locking with a wood insert used on the newer BIIT, BIIX for example.
Thanks

11. Fly Rod Grips
First off, Hello to everyone, I am new to this forum. I want to build a new fly rod and was considering a wooden grip. I really do not want to go through the expnse of buying a lathe and the accessories needed to accpmplish this. My question is, are there any members who do this, and are there any drawbacks to using a wood grip.? I have a few really nice pieces of Kingwood that I think would loo
