Made this Iron Cross large. Was concerned as I was progressing about the size but the way it lines up on the alternating patterns worked out good

Borrowed this from Jim Rippe's photo. It works perfectly with the 9/11 weave

16. Rod finish
Due to several personal issues, it has been a couple of years since I have built a rod. I am now starting a build for my son that I had started planning previously and had to put on hold. My question is regarding rod finish. I like using afcote and in looking at my current supply of it I have a bottle of hardener and a bottle of resin that have both been opened and used previously. They have been

Joe I build surf rods like this all the time. My method is to secure the reel seat in place first then do the X flock. I always leave extra so that I can trim it back to where I want it to be. Just a note on that is to not cut it exactly where you want it because when you cut the X flock it can sometimes shrink back a little too far. I like to leave just a little extra and tuck it under the ends

I also prefer to mount them locking down from the top. Seems to me this works better with all reel seats

I love them for the surf rods I build. Yes they are heavier than graphite but also much stronger IMO

20. thread bleed?
I am building a surf rod that is going after large fish in heavy current. On the guide wrap the customer wants red, white, and blue all metallic. I will wrap this first with a black nylon and then cp it and then wrap the metallic over it and finish it. I need the nylon down first for the strength. Do you think the black nylon could bleed into the other colors, especially the white? Or shade the c

21. Re: going pro?
Once you get paid to build a rod you are a pro. Doesn't matter how many you build or how much you make.

The ICRBE is great but nothing can beat working one on one with an experienced builder. I am fortunate to have that with one of my very best friends

I emailed St Croix customer service with a couple of questions on a blank and guide spacing on that blank over 2 weeks ago. I have not received a reply as of yet. Very dis-appointed

WOW guys so many ideas. This is great. My original idea was simple. All I want to do is place my initials and date. But now I've got some other ideas brewing as well. Thanks so much!

I am building a rod for a friend and he would like his name written on the rod. I have never done this before and am wondering what kind of marker I should use for this. I would also imagine that after writing the name that it should get a coat of finish as well, correct? And would it need cp 1st before the finish coat?

I have tried the pro wrap. One thing I did not like about it was it's memory. Meaning it does not straighten out like I expect it to when taken off the spool and it remains somewhat curly
Personally I do not use metallic directly on the guide itself unless I put it over the other thread I already have on there or off the guide as an accent. I would not use metallic alone on the whole guide wra

When Gudebrod used to make thread I would tie down with a size C thread and then add a 2nd wrap over it with size D

Thanks for all the help. Not sure yet on which one to get. Looking for a little clarification on the MHX series. Any one use the HM (high modulus) blanks and what (if any) advantage do they offer? I am looking at the HM P844-MHX (popping and a faster tip) and the HM-SJ843-MHX (spin/jig)

I mainly build surf rods here in the Northeast. Your original guide spacing looks excellent as a starting point
