Louisiana residents not eligible for drawing - you already got boudin and Cajun Lagnaippe Hot Sauce - what more do you need!
Swamp Boyz
Might not need but bet you'd like to have a BCS Title or maybe even a SEC Championship

Not the prettiest blank but they are doggone tough. Have made a number of grouper rods using gator glass. Spiral wrapped they get the job done.

I've built several grouper rods on gator glass blanks.
You can buy a more expensive blank and a prettier blank but gator glass is one tough blank.
I would advise spiral wrapping.

SCARY! I was nervous the first couple of times but it does work and I've had no problems since making the repairs.

Kinda still have my first one. 25 years old.
My grandson and I stripped it down except for reel seat and HE rewrapped it. Now it is his first rod. I like that..

Amen to spatulas.
Artist's palette knives work well. Can be filed down and shaped and bent to almost any configuration. The longer ones work well for mixing. Last forever.

I have found the thumb bar reels to be superior for flipping.

Steve,
I use a toothpick and put a drop of finish in the guide channels before I put any finish on the wraps themselves.
Dust bunnies, thumb prints, etc. everyone here has done something like that at LEAST once.
Don't get discouraged, it's all part of the game.

Do a search for "Jesse Buky" and you will find his method of removing a reel seat.
Fastest,easiest way I know of.
Don't have time to go into it myself.

Don't send a check--send cash in small amounts in several different envelopes. No return address and Tom can't return to sender.

A coat of finish is not something that has to be done, but I find the "over wrap" of thread is much easier to do with a coat of finish on the under wrap.

Jesse,
There is a 2 part liquid urethane available. Pourable. It expands on an 8:1 ratio, depending on a couple of variables. With one end of the rod open it should expand out that way and not crack the rod although I don't think that would happen anyway. Working time is longer than with the spray can.
Find a company that does cold storage insulation work and you could probably "bum&qu

My recollection of "Jack Eckerd" rods are of chrome plated (wire) guides and reel seats that were probably the cheapest thing on the market at that time.
Usually wrapped in brown and yellow or red and black. I don't know what kind of finish was used but the sun really did a number on it. White fiber glass rods. Mostly spinning rods. Sold to a lot of tourists . Rods were tough but

I like it very much. Decent pot-life and no bubble problems. So far no "yellowing" .

Have built 60-80 lb grouper rods. They are a very serviceable and tough rod in this weight class. Reasonably priced blank. Don't know how they would be for lighter bass fishing use.

If you are going to use a spiral wrap then you really don't need a gimbel. IMO.

Ken,
As marcel stated, lack of CP gives the wrap a translucent appearance. You can use NCP thread and eliminate this. Or use CP.
A lot of people like the translucent look and do this on purpose.
It is not going to affect the fishability of the rod, so, if it was mine I would just use it.

I apply the epoxy with the drying motor turning. BUT, before I turn it on I take a toothpick and apply a drop of epoxy in the hollow (channel) of the guide foot. Turn on the drying motor and apply the finish. I don't play with the finish..I put it on and leave it alone. I know some who turn the rod by hand with great results. Find what is comfortable for you and stick with it and it will beco
