I tend to keep the rods I build for myself pretty basic. But using the tips from this forum they are getting much better.

three straight recommendations, must be good.
I was actually looking at those, have had good luck with Batson Blanks, most likely the route I'll go
Thanks

Does anyone make a dedicated Dredge blank yet.
I've made them before using cutdown calstar and other blanks, however I was hoping by now someone would have a cheaper option.

Have someone who is interested in having me build them a couple of Deep Drop sword rods for the Northeast Canyons. I've never built any and was looking for a recommendation on a good blank. I'm think a Seeker Black Steel or Calstar Hercules. He's fishing Avet 80's on them.

Good point Tom.
I'm thinking of using closed cell foam on either end to take up any space and give a soft surface to absorb any impact. Poor man's Pelican case.
Actually a styrafoam pool noodle around the out side would work as well.
Keep the ideas coming

21. shipping rods
I know this has been covered befoe but when I did a search I got mostly ads for free shipping on orders.
So I need to ship an 11' and 10' both one peice. From Cape cod to the Keys. Last time I did this ( several years ago) I bought a peice of PVC pipe. Bubble wrapped the rods and sealed the ends of the pipe. Was wondering what you guys do to number one protect the rods and two ways to keep shi

Tom Kirkman's book is very good as well as any of the Dale Clemen's. I recently bought Billy Vivona's book to advance my wraps, my last couple of wraps have been the best I've ever done thanks to Billy's book.
I actually reread sections of Advanced custom rod building recently and it's amazing what Dale and the other pioneers did with a piece of paper and imagination. No Excel or Visual wrap p

Normally I wouldn't do a fancy wrap on a gaff as it is just a hammer like tools. I've been known to use mine as a hammer when blue dogs get close to the boat.
However in this case I'm making a set of rods and want the gaff to have the same wrap. These will be donated to a local veterans group to be @#$%& off to support a fishing trip for wounded vets.
I'm also making matchin

Given that their gaff's they won't see a ton of flexing especially in between the 2 grips where the wrap is, I wonder if a couple of coats of automotive clearcoat over the finish would work. Anyone ever try this?
Their being built off AMX E-Glass blanks.
Never heard of the Sunscreen trick, probably would work but it won't hapen on this application. No way these guys would spend the time to

Tom, my usual go to finish is Aftco. Most of the thread I've been using lately is Prowrap.
I'm more concerned about the thread color fading, so I was wondering what everyone has found to help reduce the color fading.
Is there a certian finish that works the best?
Also would adding a few extra coats of color perserver help?
These gaff's usually get velcro strapped to hardtop legs f

What finish do you guys feel offers the best UV protection. I'm building a few Gaffs that will see a lot of sun. Just curious what you feel has the best protection from fading.
These gaff's will have a 14" wrap in the middle. Thanks

Gabe,
I second Rolly on his comment. I wouldn't mix different manufacturers in the same cup even if I had all the time in the world. If things are going to go wrong it's always going to be when your in a hurry, why take the chance. If your trying to experiment that's fine just don't take the chance when your cut for time.

28. Re: Blank Scraps
Matt,
Go to the local hardware store and get some 3-4' sections of pvc pipe or wooden dowels in 1/2"- 3/4" diameter. they are cheap and slightly larger diameter than a blank wich will make it easier to learn. The other benifits of the PVC or wooden dowel is you don't have the taper of the balnk wich makes it slightly easier, and you don't have to strip off guides.
Worked for me, g

Larry, thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking of a way to incorporate all the branches but the campain ribbons are a great idea. I could make each guide wrap a different ribbon.
Jim, a local supplier has offered to sell me 2 lamiglass blanks at a more than resonable price. I've always had good luck with Lamiglass so it's a win win.

David, these rods will get used their not for display. The center does a couple of fishing outings every years so these rods either get used during the outings or get raffled and the proceeds go to the center. I had specifically asked that any rods I build go directly to the vets for their personal use, hence my desire for american made components
Tom, I will look in to the REC guides thank
