Mandrels for real seat and handles is what I meant. He was away because he was at the Rod Builders Show in Charlotte.

Thanks to all of the rod builders, exhibitors, sponsors, organizers, experts, novices, friends. The Charlotte Show is my winter oasis. I come to the show with anticipation, looking for inspiration and always leave with new ideas and a bunch of loot. I guess you could say, I was successful again this year.
Thanks to Stan Gregory, donor of the epoxy mixer. I will put it to good use this week

So I guess, no one would be willing to demo guide placement at the show. I know there are many articles. I have read them. They make sense to me, but I would still like to see the demo and the live version of guide theory and placement. I say DEMO.

Tom,
I have an idea. Why not have a floor demo at the next Rod Builder's Show given by someone who is comfortable with optimum guide spacing methodology. This would alleviate the anxiety shared by many who like spacing charts and formulas. I believe what you are saying, however, a demo would help my confidence immeasurably.
Thanks,
BOB

Just want everyone to know what a great guy Bob Meiser is. I vacationed in Oregon this summer. Part of my itinerary centered on visiting Bob Meiser's shop in Medford. Bob, you are a gracious host. Not only did I spend half a day in Bob's shop, but Otto and I also went to the river with Bob to cast and try different lines on our respective rigs. Bob freely shared pointers and tricks of the tr

I got my decals from the local university bookstore. They are called "Spirit Accents" but I don't have the name of the manufacturer with me. I googled the subject and there is a whole industry that produces decal making supplies that exploit computer-generated graphics/printers, etc. From all of the inquiries that I have out there, ink jet printer ink is not stable over long periods

I thought I had a good idea. Use fingernail decals with university logos to make special commemorative rods. They are the correct size, and they obviate the need and hassle in seeking copyright permission in order to have Jimi Ellis make them. I suggested this to another builder and he asked if they are stable and won't fade. I had to respond that I didn't know. I am in the process of trying

Here, here! You think this is good? For those of you who haven't attended the Charlotte Show, try that, too. I have met lots of great folks and stay in e-mail touch with many new friends. Rod builders are a great group! I add my thanks!!!!!!!!

10. Lathe speed
Good news. I am now up and running with a Jet mini and turning my own reel seats and handles. I am soliciting info in turning speeds for sanding and shaping handles. Info on rpm's for boring wood reel seats, turning with tools, and sanding the seats would also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Go with what you have. Over-sized would be over-kill on this rod.

I have the same question about configuration. From what I have read, most people are installing 7-10" full wells in front and somewhere around 3.5" butt (installed directly on the blank and not removable. I am building one currently and will opt for 10" in front and 3.5 behind.

I agree with the last post. You are likely looking to use a "casting resin." Most all epoxies that I have used in fly tying eventually yellow. I don't think that the casting resin will. Our area craft store sells casting resin so you may want to investigate at your local craft store.

Great show!!!!!!!!! Tom,
I had a great time and was very impressed with your organization. The evening gathering was a great sucess too. Thanks to all the sponsors.
I left the show with a boat load of stuff and I am energized to attack all of my new projects and plans.
The show will continue to grow.
This may be selfish, but since I fly fish, keep the association with the fly fis

Andy,
It was great to meet you personally, and that goes for your wife as well. I came home with a load of your stuff.
Please don't forget to send me my cork clamp and a 3/8 wood turning mandrell.
Great show, great group of people, many thanks Andy!

Wait a minute. This is the best show in the country because the two are combined. There are too many posts on this site to not believe that at least some of the rod builders are also fly fishermen. Rod building is great and enjoyable by itself, but why not also furl the leader and tie the fly. Cut fly fishers some slack, they might become a customer one day.

Just built a 9 wt. for light saltwater. I chose a set up like your second option. I think I used 2 #6s and the remainder #5s. I chose an oversized loop for the tip. I also chose single foot RECs in 6 and 5 because I saw no need to continue reducing guide size smaller than the oversize tip loop. My intended target is false albacore and loop-loop connections and backing run through the guid
