I was browsing the pictures at the link above and saw the RodMaker Mag: Rod Spec. sheet Very nice. I like it so I saved it so I can keep my own records too... I do have a question regarding some of the fields on it though (most of it is self explanitory) I'm confused with the term "Tag Width: guide/wraps". What is the meaning of Tag Width??? or is it just simple the tag of thread w

Well I have a few rods under my belt, now I want to fix my 1st one and make it the way I intended it to be. I removed the eyes and such, now what is the best way to remove the remnants of epoxy & permagloss?? I tried DNA and it starts to remove the green gel coat. I have nonacetone nail polish remover but that seems too weak to make a dent. Any other ideas on what to try? Thanks Rich

I did the @#$%& thing and got a set of casting guildes.... the tiptop is 4mm, which is too big for my needs. I was expecting a size 4 tip, not a 4mm diameter one. How do the tip sizes relate with actual diameter?

Skip here is the only info I have on the blank: Transparent maroon gloss finish. 6' 9 1/2" long, one piece. 20# class. Medium/fast action. Tip size 6. Butt diameter 1/2". I'm leaning towards a spinning setup (i'm not good at baitcasting yet). The general rule I've been following is 1 guide per foot + 1 + tiptop, so in this case I'm looking at 8 guides + tiptop. Please corre

I have a few blanks to build and I'm stumped.... Normally I would go to my local shop or call a place to order the guides, and they already know the diameters I need. In an attempt to learn, How do you determine the guide diameters from tiptop to the bottom most guide?? What other factors arethere to consider besides the obvious (baitcast or spin cast) Thanks Rich

Spencer.... I'm planning on building both The sturgeon rod for the California delta, not sure what you mean by white or green.... I'm going to assume white, because the pics of the ones I see are white/grey. In regards to a hole where they are at, further I can cast the better. The boat rod, I'm looking for something that can be used for all sorts of fishing there. During the summer they

I recieved my weave jig from Kel's rod & reel...... nice & simple, except I have NO CLUE how to use it, the directions are okay, but they kinda confuse me with the sketches in the directions. Where can I find other directions to use it?

HI all I'm looking into building a Sturgeon rod and replacing my deep sea rod, I dont have a boat (yet) so I'm limited to shoreline fishing for now. What rod blank would you recommend?? My current deep sea rod has the following specs: Master Custom Striker Comp Graphite, model- Master PST 70C, 7ft, 15-30lb line, 1/2 to 3oz lure. I've used it for rock fishing to Salmon. Any suggestions?

HI Spencer. We normally fish for cats, striper & bass... I like the steeelie rods because to me they are great overal nice & sensitive and strong. Ultimately it will be up to Larry to decided how he wants ot use it. I have a 8'6" Rainshadow steelie blank (my 1st build) yesterday I went to the Pier and caught a small shark with it, which was a total hoot!! What really stinks is I'm

Thanks for the great responses..... I will mark this as a lesson learned. Istruggles wrapping the 1st 6 guides and I do want to see my friend try out this pole (he has some health problems) What I did was hacked the thread as much I could, and it didnt come out that bad, some mistakes here and there but that's okay. It adds charactor, Ken - I would absolutely love ot come down to Charlotte

I'm working on rod#3 and this time I decided to attempt an underwrap for the eyes. I used metallics lt blue, when I was happy with the wrap pattern I sealed it with about 3-4 coats of U40 permagloss. When I wrapped the eyes over the underwrap, I had the hardest time getting the thread to go on smoothly, some areas of thread are thin and has gaps. I tried to pack teh thread and while I was able to

I'm noticing that... just got the Ken Peterson DVD today :) I'm more of a visual learner and seeing the demo made more sense to me. I am noticing that the effective spine is how my other 2 poles are setup. This one when I rol it I feel to "high spots" different than the spine I have defined now, one rolls fairly easy the other is pretty tuff to roll over. I guess I'll need to dec

Thanks Tom & Shawn... is that your book that I'm referring to?? I'm pushing the blank down with my hand and rolling the blank (opposite of your eaxmple). I can definitely feel it "pop" is you will. So by pushing down on the blank the spine wil be on the bottom, against the sirface that I'm rolling it against. (as you can see I'm confused) -Rich

I'm working on my 3rd pole. My 1st one the guy at the shop set the tip for me on a spincasting rod, When I do the "spine test" on it as shown on a few sites & in Kirkman's book. with the blank bent the tiptop eye is pointed downwards, (spine on the bottom?? ). If I do the same technique for a bait casting rod, the spine rolls (just like above) what is the direction of the tiptop?

I used to build scale models and one method we use with waterslide decals is to prep the surface with microsol, set the decal on and dab up the excess water then put microsol over the tol to help "melt" the decal into the details of the models surface. Now instead of a 2 part process like above, what you can do is use a 50/50 mix of set/sol you did both steps at one time. A word of ca
