Average weather in Greensboro, NC durring this time in winter is 52/31; what is so odd with winter in NC these days you ask? I truly hate the cold, and being from Southern California here in NC it is normaly pretty good through the winter months. In the past 15 years living here, I will say we can get weather at times, but I'll take it over other areas in the US I have lived. Tom is right,

I do cord handles. I use Atwood cord with no finish and they clean pretty well, and a far sight better than any cork or EVA handle. Atwood has the UV in it... Steve Paterson would be the guy to ask: What bloody cord are you using? The cord should be glued to the blank, Steve uses the 3M spray stuff and I use an epoxy. A picture would be nice as to what your trying to do. Here is

My head just exsploded from trying to keep up on what everyone likes... Reminds me of driving trucks when someone was asking on the CB if the scale house was open? I will add that Jim Hichs wins, because he provided "pictures." Chuck

Bob, There is really is no difference as in any other handle. Where do want the handle to fit your arm/ hands when you cast, or to fight a fish? The reel seat location and butt lenght won't change, so the open area in a split grip will vary the same as on any other handle. Chuck

"product differentiation gone bad." When I got done laughing my head off, you sent me to the dictionary on that one... Well, if they are trying to stick out and be different I give em an A+.... Personally, I wouldn't want to be caught dead with that thing in my trunk. Chuck

Jared, Just get a new batch and toss out what you have now. At some point in time, the longer you do this, you will run into an issue with finish. I went to NERB's meeting ounce and the subject came up. Put it out of your head and get a new batch... All the products used for rod finish are good, but it's a chemical reaction that takes place, and we are rod builders -- not chemists. A

Ben, Here is short vintage video you may like on Garcia Conolon: I still have one of their fly rods, and I too would not hesitate to still use it today. I had it out in the yard last summer with the first line I ever had, a straight line no taper; how under the Heavens I ever learned to cast, let alone fish, with that line I'll never know. Chuck

"It's just the normal noises in here..." Tom Petty. Personaly I have come to love that sound; reminds me kind of the wind singing on a bait line at the end of a pier full of pin rigs. Something the good Lord has blessed us with... What's for dinner? Chuck

Is this a trolling blank for Musky/Pike/Walleye? Or are you going to be throwing baits/lures with it? The reason I ask is, you seem unconcerned about lure weight. Chuck

I can think of a disadvantage to a power wrapper; you have something else or new to learn. I would love to have a power wrapper, but I am afraid I would hate it and feel like I spent the money foolishly. I have the cheapest hand wrapper money can buy; found it on an action site and can't seem to find them anymore. Trully hand made and can't see why anyone would buy one, but I modified it and i

What could possibly be wrong with the BBQ? This area of NC has its own style of BBQ, but it is good and should not be over looked. You won't find it anywhere else in the country, so at least give it a try. We actually are considered by Google to be the "BBQ Capital" (that's right, not Texas; sorry boys), and if its on the internet someone is going to believe it. The vinegar based sa

Marking it off would be the only way to know. Remove the spool with the reel on the rod and lay it on the edge of a table like in this example from Anglers Resource: Unless there is something real obvious, using braid and having a closer choke point may not be such a bad thing. I would like to know what you find out. Chuck

Bob, Most of the folks who wrote those programs can't keep up with your questions; you maybe the "guppy." It is hard to say what your files, and how your programs, are going to do playing with a new operating system. The best you can do is back-up what files you have, and hope the application programs play well with the new operating system. Deal with one issue at a time and dig t

This is like engine builders racing dyno's: don't mean nothing if you don't put a car in the race. Hardloy rings will work just fine... let the customer prove the guides he bought won't work before you sell him on another rod. My guess is that the inserts will last before the rod gives out... Chuck

Welcome David, The second rod I built was on this kit MHISK-5 It was chosen to throw 1 oz Gotcha plugs and metals; I built it for my wife and liked it so much that I built one for myself. As far as the kit goes, it was OK and will make a good rod; but this hobby is about doing your own thing, and even I strayed away from some of the kit parts. It is just the nature of all kits The bla

Maryann, Mepps was a popular brand back in the day, the #5 is 1/2 ounce and the #3 is 1/4 oz. I did well with Kastmater lures also when they came on the seen, and the 1/4 to 1/2 oz in these as well. Other brands or types of spinners may have some other way to measure in weight what there #'s are, but a 1 3/4 oz spinner would be like throwing a bowling ball at most river trout. Don't know wh

David, I built one using a Carolina Cast Pro blank, and I am real happy with it. I have a friend who I fish with from time to time who also built one, and he too likes the blanks. Mudhole carries them or you can buy them dirrect from Tommy Farmer. Guides and seat can be anything your heart desires after you pick spinning rod or casting rod. One thing I like to do is, instead of using the t

Barry, It is just the way they do it on the Gulf coast in many areas; here in North Carolina we pin rig. When in Rome, do like the Romans do... My guess is that they are not hanging 1 + pound live baits to entice the kings to the hook. Hear on the NC coast, it is not uncommon to have almost a 2 lb blue fish for bait. The fall run typically sees' larger taylor blues than the spring. I perf

Bartosz, Oh no, thank you for your input, I now have a new place to add to the bucket list for fishing destinations. Alsways looking for a new twist for the ol'dance. And if you ever get this way (NC), look me up, it'll be a hoot - I guarantee it. Just curious, do you all use down riggers for your deep trolling? We had a deep lake in Southern California, lake Silverwood, with land locked

Bartosz, The blanks will do what you are wanting them to do, kind of... Take the last one FS966T, it has lure rating of 3/8 to 2 ounces; It will throw or flip baits in that range, but will have a sweet spot somewhere in the middle of that range that will work the best -- my guess would be around 1 1/4 ounces. It won't like throwing 4 ounce baits at all, and may even break if you give it a ha

Actually, Steve Paterson of Rooster's Custom Rods is the cord handle king, and Bob, along with other sponsers of this board carry his videos and turks head jig. It was great to meet Steve at the ICRBE last year, and I enjoyed his seminar on cord handles. Hope to see him there again this year, but I don't see him on the list of exhibitors yet. He is out on the left coast, and I bet it is a

Adam, I have two 8' rods used for the salt, a his and hers deal. I have 13" of blank below the reel seat, both are spinning and have a surf rod look and feel to them. They are good for casting two handed, and both the wife and I have no problems landing fish. I have 12' surf rod, store bought, that has 24 " below the seat; it gets a bit awkward in landing fish for my wife. I buil
