Andrew. You've had a lot of really experenced rod builders answer you questions. I had this trouble a while back and posted a question on the forum. I called mudhole and flex coat and had all sorts of suggestions. I washed the mixing cups with alcohol, ordered new mixing sticks, and opened a new package of epoxy. In the end I think it was excessive heat from a lighter. Chip

I have been on the road all day and just now able to check the post. Thanks to all that have responded. I got some great information. This is the tenth rod for me mostly Mud Hole kits and some Allstar blanks from Scott (Fishsticks). While learning I just made them and gave them away. It has been a slow learning curve. To Bill - I see you have a South Lousiana area code and I may give you a c

It is finally time to build a rod for myself. I want to build a worm rod, a rod for spinner baits and top water rod. I would love suggestions on premium blanks and guides. Thank you Chip

Bill, I wrote my logo on a piece of paper and scanned it into a jpg file a few weels ago. When I transfered it into the graphics program it handled the logo and the background as one. There was no way to separate the two. I did like the idea of writing on decal paper, I may give that a try. Chip

Coy, I have a craftmans lathe I bought a few years ago. It was on the floor a long time and I made them an offer they couldn't refuse. It is a heavy duty lathe and is great for bowls, and other large items. It did not turn fast enough for polishing pens and I still use a smaller lathe for polishing. I know nothing about turning foam grips, but I did buy the Harbor Freight tools mentioned earl

Thanks Tom - I cut the underwrap off before it dryed and with the help of acetone I am ready to start again. I could not locate the purple/gold trimar Barry mentioned, but I will get some NCP. Thanks Chip

Bill, Thanks for the pictures. Great Job!!! I would like to know how you did the Tiger Bait and LSU decals. I have seen the Tiger in the Mud Hole Catalog, but not the others. The Tiger Wrap may have to wait anyway. I did what Barry recommended except I forgot the CP and the beautiful Yellow and Black underwrap disappeared. Thanks Chip

I am about to start my first “Throop Tiger Wrap”. I have read the article and instructions in Rod Maker Magazine. Last night I was reading instructions on a link provided by Visual Weave and they used a technique with three threads on the under and overwrap. This morning I read a post from someone using paint as part of the underwrap. This rod is for an avid LSU fan and I need a

After putting on the second coat of Flex Coat High Build the epoxy started to coagulate. It looks like someone poured paint over a ball. I thought maybe the temperature (68) was too cold. Today I put a third coat to repair the second coat at (80) with the same results. Today was better, but it is still not right. Any suggestions? Chip

I had a small problem last night getting the longer Madeira Thread spool on the new style Pac Bay Thread Carriage. Have any of you made adjustments to allow for this? I would hate to stop wrapping and build a new carriage. Chip

I just checked the 2nd coat of Lite FInish Epoxy. It has either bubbles or sawdust contamination. Can I sand or cut off the specks or should I continue with another coat?

I have a friend that wants a 5 or 5'6 rod to use in his pirogue. He plans to throw a frog, worm or buzz bait, so he does not want an ultra lite. Can I get a 6' med or light and cut it down to 5'? He wants something that still has some backbone but can be cast with just the arm or wrist. If so what is the best way to do this? I do this just for fun and I don't want to spend a lot. Thanks C

Thanks to the earlier discussion on Diamonds, I finally understood Chevrons. The simple explaination by Mr. Kirkman and the advice of Mr. Adams to look at Rodbuilderstutorial.com, the light finally came on. I have several books and several tapes on rod building and wrapping, but they all skip the simple explaination of Diamonds and Chevrons and jump to the advanced shapes, objects and pattern

Thanks for all the replys. I'm not sure I want to go the DC route, but I may email Roger to get the details. There is a nice guy down here that is a custom rod builder. He let me watch him make Butt Wraps the other day and he was working the rod back and forth lining up the thread. I would like to back up for mistakes, but also there are times you just want to get it right. Thanks again.

I just finished wrapping my first rod. I am having trouble with the wrapper free-wheeling. If I need to back up or work the wrap I have to reach back to the handle. The wrapper turns good without the rubber band attached. Is there something I can do to the motor to loosen it up?
