I always lay down a paper towel. Handy to have if you have an accident or get epoxy on your hands lol.

What do you mean by straightest axis? Less wobble on the wrapper?

That is good to know, thank you very much. Im pretty confident it is too much pigment. I will re-attack and let you guys know. Thanks for all the good help.

Is it still okay to use a year later after turning yellow? I have fresh stuff because I discarded to old yellow one thinking they may be no good. Sounds like too much pigment. I try just a little dab and see what happens. Thanks for all your help.

To clear any confusion. I mix 50/50 epoxy for a good min and a half at least. Drop about a nickle size portion on a plate. Go to my rod and apply a coat. Go back to the plate and drop a toothpick with about a 1/4' of pigment into the nickle sized portions and mix for about 30 seconds each. Then start marbling. After letting it rotate for several hours it is still tacky. After 48 hours it started

I guess I could always hold on to the left over epoxy in the mixing cup and see how that cures after a few hours. That would tell me if it was the mix of epoxy or the pigment.

Thanks guys. I generally use one generous dip of the toothpick into the pigment and mix it with the nickle sized portion of the epoxy on the plate. Is that too much pigment?

Well, started off tacky, weather warmed a bit then it went soft and actually started to drip. Do you increase the hardener to compensate?

Hello rod builders,
I started trying to master marbling recently. My problem is the finish is not setting. I am using a 50/50 mix of epoxy. Then adding pigment and epoxy via small plate and mixing then applying. Seems as though either I have a bad batch of epoxy, the pigment is messing up the set, or something else. Any words of advise?
Thanks,
Brad

13. Re: So what now?
So far I have sanded down to just a graphite blank and it looks really good. If I go with permagloss, is it easy to use? Do you wax after permagloss? Also, where to by permagloss, plasticoat, or two pack?
Thanks again for all the help. So far so good. I will keep you guys posted.

15. So what now?
I have stripped down an old rod I am trying to redo from scratch. My question is, now that I am down to a blank, what next? I scraped most of the glue and epoxy off with a heat gun, but there is still glue residue and spots where the blank finish has been taken off. Do I sand down the entire blank with some fine sand paper, clean w/ Acetone, and spray lacquer to get that new blank finish back on

Guys,
Thanks for all the great advice. I will keep you posted with progress. Also it is a hollow blank, does that mean it is graphite? Any other suggestions is definately welcomed too.

Hello,
I am still new to rod building and learning. I came across an old rod that I figure would be fun to re build. I have a few questions though
1. The blank lenght is 5' 3". It originally had a wooden butt about 14" in length. It is pretty stiff. What would it be good for? I am thinking of tuna troller?
2. I used a razor to scrape/cut old finish and guides off. How do I bring

We use a 12/0 treble hook with 5oz weight. For casting and snagging BIG Spoonbill in Oklahoma up to 60-80lbs. I need a rod that has a butt diameter of about 1.190in/30.23mm. So it' needs to be pretty stoute! I would like to find som

Cant really go wrong with the typiclal "boatrod". Something in the range of 6-7ft med action. I use several versions which mount a PENN Jigmaster type/size reel. This is assuming it is a baitcasting style rod. Does he troll, live bait fish, or cast to them? If I fish on a larger boat with casting space, I like to use a deckhand style rod of about 10ft lenght and long casting handle wit
