I have been using Tru Oil for finish for the last few years with good to great results. I generally apply four coats with my finger without sanding between coats. Can I get better results with sanding between coats? If so, what do you guys use to sand before applying a new coat? Finally, do you guys use your fingers to apply and how many coats are applied till you reach your desired results? Than

This may be just a bit off topic, but it certainly has to do with rodbuilding. I would like to turn some handles for baitcasters that match the wood of the handles I create. Has anyone done this before and how in the world do you take of the old plastic ones and install the new wood ones. Thanks

Wait for a slight sag and wick off the excess. The time needed before turning will decrease as the finish sets. After just a few rods, you should have the system down pat.

I was hoping to use the skin from the redfish I catch. I get plenty so I would have many to play around with. I would be happy to go through the trial and error process if I knew it could be done.

Has anyone ever tried using scaled fish skin as a decoration under finish as I have seen snake skin used.

Threads on top, makes a nice transition from the rear grip. It's more comfortable than your hands resting on the threads in my opinion.

When speaking of a rod's power, Med Lt, Med, Med Hvy, etc. How much do these terms relate to the size of fish you are catching? Or is it only for the size of lure the rod is rated for?

Can someone direct me to tutorial that explains how a scale pattern is obtained. I would like to try one that emulates a redfish scale pattern, I think this wrap would honor Mr. Redfish well. Thanks in advance.

The rod is a 6 6" med light rod. I must have missed measured on the blank when I made my marks for the seat placement. The problem is that I have already done my thread work and finish on the split grip area, so moving or redoing is not an option. I'm just curious if its worth finishing. Four hours of butt wrap and another hour of guide work is a lot for a rod that may not perform correctly.

I decided to build a spiral wrap baitcaster for myself which I don't build often. After I glued everything up, it seems I put the reel seat a bit too high in relation to most standard rods I have compared it too. The bottom of the seat lies at about 10 1/2 inches from the butt of the blank. The blank is a SCIV med light action. I'm concerned of the rod either being uncomfortable to fish with or t

What about CA glue for the repair? It is not the whole grip that turns but the top half inch.

Can flex coat epoxy be thinned and still be effective? I need to get epoxy through a syringe to repair a cork handle that is turning a bit where it meets the real seat, but I cant seem to find an epoxy thin enough. Thanks

I often hear the term jigging for freshwater, does this just mean tightlining with a jighead. Sorry I only fish saltwater So it looks like I will be building this rod as a spiral baitcaster for tightling soft plastics and swimbaits. The fun may be fishing it different ways and deciding which I like the best, we will see if I notice a difference in the XF tip

For you guys that make rods or fish in the Southern Gulf area, I have a St. Croix 3S68MXF that I happened to purchase by accident. I thought I could use that opportunity to build a rod for myself. I fish primarily for redfish in the La marshes and also fish a few tournaments throughout the year. I have built quite a few rods including spinning and spiral wrap baitcasters, but I have no idea what

Thank you alex, I will be using a smaller curado from shimano. So just to be clear are you saying that I should use size six guides from the reel all the way to the tip. I fish both the IFA and GCAA as well.

I mainly build spinning rods for trout and redfish in the La area. I would like to put together a conventional baitcasting rod for myself just to force myself how to throw one. What are the reasons for choosing a size 12 or 16 for my stripper. Does reel height have something to do with it, I figured all baitcasters are similar. I figure I would go with 12 or 16 stripper 10, 8, 7, then size 6 fly

May I ask for when is a good time to consider an extra fast tip. would it be useful for tight lining with light jigheads?

I have been building for a few years now and have been exclusively using wood for split grip handles as well as butt and foregrip. I have come to realize that I really like the feel of cork in my hands while fishing, but I don't want to lose the wood look. I will be keeping the wood butt and foregrip and use cork for part of the handle. My grips have always been 31/2 inches long off the reel seat

For you guys that do fade wraps, do you only put one row of thread followed by the next darker, or do you need to use multiple rows for the desired effect. Ex: white followed be light green then green, then dark green. Am I completely off?

I'm am installing a Fuji exposed reel seat on a medium weight rod. Is it ok to ream out the ribbed section a bit to make it fit? Do you guys use an arbor for the section that is not ribbed near the foregrip? Thanks

Just checking if anyone is using Pro wrap size D for all applications, it seems to be a bit smaller that other threads of that same size. I'll be honest, Size A is getting a little harder to see as I get older.

I recently completed a rod for a good friend of mine who fishes redfish tournaments. I usually only use wood grips, but he specified that he would like cork instead do to comfort levels. After a few months of fishing the cork grip that butts up to the real of the reel seat became slightly loose and with twist a bit while fishing or you can move it by hand as well. The rod is a baitcaster with ju
