I like to go downlocking so I don't loosen the nut while casting.
Uplocking put's the palm of your hand right on it!

In the case you are mentioning, the thread is being saturated and has no CP.
Therefore, the wrap is sealed and the finish does not have to slop down onto the blank.
I make my fly and ultralight wraps like this and thw finish just hits the blank.
I use Robbert Simmonds or Grumbacher brushes $$$ and have practiced brush control.
As said above, it gets easier after the first 100 {:-)

A friend is thinking of using a daiwa basia (spinner) with 20 lb braid on this blank and would like an idea of whether low riders are worthwhile and how many guides I'll need.
Also, any thoughts on the layout?

I am a fan of the Sic and use lots of them as my go to guide. I think fopr the budget, the Alconite is a good bargain and has the same Stainless frame as the Sic with a less costly ring material. One thing about the Alconites is, they can take more of a hit than Sic.
As for skimping on guides? If you are using a good blank like a Lami, Sage, GUSA etc. why not continue the quality of the componen

Sorry to hear of this tragedy and my thoughts go uot to this mans family and friends.
As head of a water rescue, I can't stress enough the need for a PFD when on the water.
Coast guard personnel won't even go out on the dock without a vest.
It might seem an inconvenience, but it can save your life.
I wish all of you a safe, healthy fish filled season.
Be well!

I use a 120 grit belt on my 1" sander.
The Ti is the same as any other guide as far as finishes go.
I can't think of anything lurking that you need to know about.
Enjoy the light weight trouble free nature of those babies!

I have a 108-1L and have caught many nice sized bass (to #25lb) and blues (to #14lb) on it. It is rigged with a Penn Slammer 460 loaded with 30 lb Power Pro and the drag is set at 10 lbs with a drag scale. No problems at all and I can throw 3 oz on it but would not recommend wailing on it with the 3. However, 2.5 oz is fine for leaning on it. If you need to really get out there, a 9 foot spinner

I use strobes for commercial work all the time.
The secret is to get the flash off the camera with an extension cable.
The reason you have specular highlights (hot spots) is that the angle from the flash to the subject is also nearly the same angle as the subject to lens. This bounces the flash right into the lens. Set the lights a bit above and to the sides of the lens and pointed at the subj
