Boy I hope it's only a trend. 5 years ago I could fish from my kayak alone and in peace. Now, everywhere I go there are a half-dozen kayaks, worse on weekends. I hope this trend sone passes, so I can get back to fishing alone and in peace. Oh, the reason to fish from a kayak is; you catch a lot of fish:)

Don't be afriad to take this old surf rod fishing. You may be surprised as to how confortable a fishing tool it is. I fish my late Dad's old surf rod often. It brings back good memories.

I use masking tape to mark guide locations and such on rod blanks. I also use electricians tape to hold guides for test casting. I use alcohol to remove glue residue that remains after I remove the tape. Is there a better way to remove the sticky after the tape is removed? Thanks

I use it for butt caps on large rods and reel seats where i need an epoxy that fills. It holds fine but can be hard to clean up so be careful not to get it on the outside of the seats or grips. Also it will show at the reel seat and grip joints if you use too much. John

I use a small file and file the finish lightly until I can get a hold of the end of a piece of thread. Then unwrap the wrap. You can soften the finish a bit with a hair drier. I find using a file is easier to control then a knife and I don't run the risk of cutting my self. Go slow, it's a bit of a pain. John BTW the shrink tube works well.

For an extension of only 5" I would glue apiece old rod section into the butt end to get the 5 inches. Then go to Wal-mart and buy a crappie stick, one of those telescoping ones, for about $7. That provides all sizes of tubes to build the handle on and slip down over the extension. This method may add a few oz. to the overall weight, but it's behind the reel seat. Anyway, I have done this

Ditto your experience. I use tape on many rods. Bushings on light weight builds. John

Just a tip. I find the 3M SandBlaster Flexible Finishing Pads in 400, work really well for sanding in rod-building work including making water break-free areas. John

I'm thinking of building a rod for use on speck. trout, fishing from a kayak, casting 1/4 oz. jigs, on this blank. Does anyone have experience with this blank? It this a reasonable selection for this application? John

I am restoring an old South Bend with a wooden handle and a metal reel seat (Aluminum maybe.) The reel seat is covered with green corrosion. Does anyone have any suggestion as to how to brighten up the reel seat? Thanks John

I’m refurbishing a 60s vintage rod for a friend. The guides and wrappings are in great shape. I assume the coating on the thread is varnish; it’s in pretty good shape too. Can I put a coat of epoxy or varnish over the old coating without removing? If not, is it possible to remove the old varnish without damaging the thread? I don’t want to re-wrap the guides if possible. The thread is

I have an old rod to repair that has the ferrule made with an over sleeve on the butt end to form the female end. Over time the male end has worn and will not fit tight enough to fish with. Does anyone have any ideas how I can make this ferrule system a snug fit again? John.

I'm ready to use some flocked shrink tube to restore a beat up cork handle. Should I cut the tube to length first or let it a bit long and trim after shrinking? This is my first time with this product so any advice would be appreciated. John

I have an old surf rod to restore. My question is should I use a smaller or larger diameter thread for the guide under warp then I use for the over wrap? Thanks John

All I can tell you I referb and fish old rods with great results. So strip the eyes off, refinish the wooden handle if it has one, shine up the old metal reel seat and fish it. They tend to be slower then today's rods, fiberglass, under warps and a metal ferrule, will do that, but they really fish soft baits well. I just came home from the Gulf after catching 3 pompano on an old Garcia and an

If you go longer the 7' it's hard to clear tip tangles and to re-string if you snap your line. Also, I prefer one piece as sometimes you need to stick your rod straight down in the water (when a red fish runs under the kayak.) and you don't want to lose the tip at that time. Keep the butt short enough to pass in front of you when wearing a PFD. Split grips give you a place to wrap float materia

I’m building an 8’8” spinning rod to cast ¼ oz. jigs long distance from a pier. I usually use Fuji BYAG Js for my stripper guides. Does anyone know of another guide series that would be taller from the blank to the ring? Thanks John

A custom rod, including one you made for your use will beat any equivalent off- the-shelf rod hands down because it is made for your fishing style, body size, reel, lure and line. It involves a lot more then just assembly of parts. The BPS in our area sells a St. Croix SC III spinning rod for about $180. It costs me about $160 for the parts to make the same SC III rod for myself plus about 8

I just came back from surf fishing an old Abu Garcia glass rod and a Eagle Claw glass rod both that I have refurbished. I really enjoy fishing them along with my high tech modern blanks. Often they out fish my newer blanks. Use a concept guide spacing and small running guides. The old fiberglass blank may surprise you. John

Hard to beat that 1098 for a pier rod, it's what I use. I have nothing against a two piece on performance. I use 2 piece for boat and surf rods all the time. But I use one piece for pier rods because you need to point the rod tip straight down from time to time and you can lose the tip. So if you can transport a one piece 9' I would go with that. John,

I’m building a spinning rod for casting ½ oz Pompano jigs in the surf. The blank is an su1262f Cascade blank rated for 1/2 to 2oz extended to 11”. I’m using a Penn Sargus 5000 with Stren Sonic 30 lb. braid. The guides and spacing are as follows: BKLG 30 31” from reel face, BKLG 20 49” inches from reel face, chocker TKTAG 8J at 62” based on 2.28inches X27 and three TKTAG 8Js spaced
