Hey Trung , did you get that finish problem under control yet ? I think it could be the heater and possibly any colgne or deodorants/anti-perspirants you may be using. Something has silicone in the area you are finishing your rods in. My guess would be the heater. Lemme know how it's going for you now. Randall Wilinski

Hi Trung, I don't store my stuff in a plastic tackle box. I'm wondering if your plastic tackle box got contaminated ? I use a clean cardboard box. Rubbing alcohol gets the nod to keep my hands clean while working on my rods. Seems to work fine for me. Use new brushes. Test wrap those threads on a scrap blank...with and without your color preserver and finish. How are you storing yo

I've used nylon panty hose cut into small squares used to wipe the PG on with. The material works just fine for my needs. Better than coffee filters too. The old bamboo fly rod repair masters used them for varnishing the bamboo blanks too.

Thanks Ken and Jim. I'm glad I decided against installing a gimbal. It would probably have destructed the rod. I think letting it spin where it wants to in the boat rod holder would be best in this case. The rod handle should be long enough not to worry about bottoming out then. I figure the re-enforcing ring should be about smack in the middle when the rod is placed into the rod holder the

Thanks Barry. I thought of that one too ... but just recently. When I first got this rod Slick Butts weren't in existence just yet and the rod had me stumped for the longest time on how to keep the rod grip from getting chewed up again. My cousin should be shocked when he sees his rod again! It might even last this time around long enough for him to get tired of looking at it and pit

I don't like using a shammy. Had a nightmare with it once ... that was enough. Have you thought of contamination from the tin foil ??? I understand there may be a slight coating of oil on tin foil. I never touch my wraps while doing them or even after doing them.

Hi all, I'm working on a trolling rod for a cousin. Does anybody know the depth of boat rod holders used in boat gunnels ??? I'm placing re-enforcing rings in the bottom of a trolling rod and want to know where the top edge of the ring of the boat rod holder is . I wanna make sure the rod doesn't come back in a season of hard abuse/use by my cousin. It originally looked like that pug dog

Jeremy, The coloring of the foam I'm talking about would go into the making of the foam from a two part mix that is used to make the foam that is poured into a mold to make it in the first place. I gotta find that recent Rodmaker article that shows how to make foam handle material and see if there is further info to add coloring agents to it when being made from the two part mix. The color wou

Jim, If you have a Dremel Moto Tool available to you it makes quick work of cutting a small groove into the reel seat if you are discarding it for a new one. I like the braided fishing line method mentioned by Fred for removing the foam grips. if they are cork, take a pliers with adjustible handle jaws with teeth on the inside of the jaws and use the teeth or jaws to pinch just the cork off the

Do they make pigments you can add to foam that you make that will color it to get what you want ? I'm talking about that stuff you buy in raw materials that you mix to get a foam that you put in a mold like a tube to get a handle in a raw unshaped material. I believe the article was in Rodmaker. Making foam grips for the graphite skins that cover it. I don't recall any coloring agents about it t

Just a side note : When making trim rings with a hole saw on a drill press or drilling holes, it's a good idea to use some ventilation or a respirator to protect the lungs. Anything made in China that's plastic can't be good for you to breathe either! Randy

Vince, I believe the product you are looking for does exist. Ken Preston put me onto the product. It comes from a company who distributes it in Canada. It is a crystal type of pigment that is added to your clear epoxy to add glow in the dark pigments to the wrapping finish. It comes in colors, and I'm going to be building that glow in the dark Steelers rod too. I want to be able to wave that

Hi guys, Has anyone used nylon panty hose cut into small squares to apply permagloss with? I have and it works great for me. Much better than a coffee filter that seems to leave lumps all over the rod blank. The nylon panty hose makes the permagloss go on smoothe. The only drawback to the use of the nylon panty hose is that the permagloss dries out on the nylon and will stick on the rod blank

Hi guys, Do any of you guys deal a lot with double tapers inside of a rod where a ferrule needs to be placed? I just added a ferrule to a friends rod I am building that in a ferrule area, I had to make a double tapered ferrule plug to fit in the blank at that point. So strange considering that the inner blank is drawn on a mandrell and should in my opinion be tapered evenly inside. Plea

Hi guys, On the subject of using a coffee filter, I recently tried it on a new rod blank I am working on for a friend. The finish turned out not very good in my opinion and I had to refinish it again. I was using permagloss. What I DO find better than using a coffee filter is a piece of nylon panty hose with the permagloss on it, then wiped quickly the entire length of the blank or the wor

Hi Ash, Of all the tip top cement that I've ever used, it always came in a stick form but it was always heated with a flame in order to melt the end of the stick and apply directly to the rod tip then. I've never seen rod tip cement in a stick that will fit through a hot melt glue gun. Always get the rod building rod tip cement. It is a different glue than the hobby sticks or the hardw

Hi guys, I can certanly tell you from past experience that T/M regular is too thick for even a .457 lead round ball with some weight to it. All it does is spin everything around and round without mixing anything together. 18 rpm motor mixer made by yours truely. I'll probably try the T/M lite build next time and see what happens.
