2. ALPS GUIDES
The cheapest ALPS guides come with a titanium carbide ring in them so has anyone any experience of them?
Thanks

If it's for a conventional reel then there is no point in using low riders, they are really designed for spinning reels.
28" is a good butt length although you may find it a little short with the heavier leads so I'd suggest 30" to the middle of the reel may be better. Best way is to tuck the bottom of the rod butt in your armpit, extend your arm fully and grab hold of you

Sorry double post.
They still make guides similar to the ones I think you want:
As to how you get them I don't know.

It could be because metal is a better conductor than ceramics so cools down much quicker?

Thanks John.
I thought insufficient tension might be the problem. Another thing I found was about 20yards into the spool of thread there was a knot! Fortunately I had just finished a whipping when I found it.

I don't really want to put size 4.5 guides on a 12' surf rod I am building so do you think your method would work using say size 8 guides in lieu of the 4.5's and a size 10 in lieu of the 5.5?
Thanks

Guys
This principle isn't new as these guides look to have been developed from a funnel shaped guide experimented with in England in the 1970's by Don Neish in Angling magazine and later in the 1980's by John Holden.
