Arthur, When talking about the stiffest axis on a rod, it is called the spine, not spline. Think of the spine of your body, creating strength. I've built, "on the spine" and I've built using the rods straightest axis, meaning while sighting down the length of the rod, there are hopefully no bows to the left or to the right. You want any curve to go up towards the tip as viewed from

Danny, adding graphite to rodbond mix will not hurt anything. You could also add chopped fiberglass. All you are doing by adding something to the mix is to lighten it up a little. You will want to wrap some tape at either end of the blank where the reel seat lives to make sure it is centered up unless the fore and butt grips will do this on your installation.

How long has the CP dried up to the point you described? It should dry at least 24 hours before you would want to apply a finish.

Steve, why not just sit in the kayak out in the yard for practice, or just sit on the ground with your feet out in front of you. Wouldn't either of these ways simulate fishing from a kayak?

Farid, something else you might try is to wrap the blank first with silver metallic thread and then wrap over that with the yellow. The metallic thread will keep the thread bright when you apply the finish. Maybe some experimentation will give you the shade of yellow you are looking for.

Before trying to ruin what you've put together, I would expose the assembly to a little higher temperature, such as over a lamp or a heater, being careful not to get it too hot, of course. Let it warm up for several hours, even up to 8 or more hours if possible. Put your sample close by where it will warm up also. See if that doesn't set up the rod bond. No use tearing it all apart if you don

Nathaniel, If you use epoxy on the snake skin, it will turn it dark and blotchy. The CP protects the skin from the epoxy. I have only heard of attaching the skin with CP and the skin requires 2-3 coats over the skin to protect it from having the epoxy soak in especially at the edges of the skin.

I use size 4 if I can get a matching sized tip in the style guide I want to use.

Kevin, that is correct. With NCP thread, color preserver is not required. It may darken slightly, but It will keep it's solid color when finish is applied.

I guess it would depend on the customer. I only build for friends at work, and only collect after I deliver the rod. If I were building for someone I had just met, I would collect at least the amount that the components added up to. I.E. rod blank, grip, reel seat, guides, some amount for the thread and epoxy. That way, If someone stiffs you, the rod is paid for and you can sell it to someo

Greg, my name is Greg, also. I have a boat I want to sell. Do you want to buy it, sight unseen? Great, I will send some photos taken within the last 5 years. They show how great the boat is. Send a check. Is it sent yet? Yet? How about now? Where's the check?

A mix of 6cc's will coat the 9' rod, the 7' bass rod the 7' spinning rod and the decorative wraps on all of them.

If you don't mind a little more work for the brightest white, use white ncp over an underwrap of metallic silver with color preserver put on after the white. The silver really makes the white "pop". It helps to wrap the silver in one direction and the white in the opposite or apply a thin coat of finish on the silver before wrapping the white. Oh yeah, wrap and pack both colors well

Dale, after using micro guides, (less than 6mm rings), I feel like when I'm building a freshwater spinning rod that using a 6mm guide at the tip is very large. I only use a 6mm guide if I can't find a matching tip smaller than a 6mm. I can't imagine building a light rod as you are planning using an 8mm guide as the smallest guide. My set up for a 7' ML-M might look like 30-16-10-6-6-6-6-6tip

Jim, if you are looking for protection for your rod, check out Swampland to the left and look at their "stick Jackets" under miscellaneous. They are not "bags" per se, but will protect your rods and make storing and inserting them in a boat rod locker easier.

Just remember, If you are using braid and are going to tie on a leader, the guides will have to pass the knot.

If you are looking to make thin cork slices, make yourself a small miter box with some plywood and use a small backless japanese type saw that cuts on the pull stroke. You can easily make slices as thin as 1/32" and probably smaller if you care, and you lose very little cork due to the saws curf. Glue up a stack of cork rings and sand them on your lathe, or what ever you use to turn them,

The most recent slap in my face was when I purchased a fly reel from the "popular fly equipment dealer" and had to not only pay taxes (out of state purchase), but I also paid taxes on the shipping amount!!! Last purchase from them!!

Roger, are you really using a "full rebreather" mask, with oxygen and all. Xylene and oxygen together? How about some gunpowder and some C4 just to make things interesting? I believe you mean a respirator with an activated charcoal filter. That's all you need.

Russell, anytime you use a smaller item, I.E. skewer, straw, etc, you are actually creating more pressure per square inch under those items than if you used nothing at all. My preferance if I have to run the threads up over the forward end of the foregrip is to first use plumbers teflon pipe tape. This tape has no residue or adhesive to stick to the grip. Just wrap it with a light pressure to

Vince, you repainted last night, and if you wait til saturday, that's still only 5 days. I would wait until a week from saturday. If it's warm, sunny and dry where you live, put the blank outside and let it get some air and sunshine to help with the drying process.

Josh, the cone of flight principal does not apply to casting rods. It is used to describe the shape of the line as it comes off of a spinning reel and passes thru continually smaller guides as it approaches the tip. A casting rod needs maybe 2, or 3 at the most larger guides before all the same size guides going on to the tip. A 12, then an 8, then all 6 single foot guides and a 6 tip would b

Josh, I along with others owe you an appology. I don't believe you ever told the readers of this forum that you are deaf. It explains a lot about your grammer and spelling, though it doesn't really give us an excuse for being cruel for lack of a better word. Knowing this about you also helps us all be patient with helping you. Sometimes you are difficult to understand through your writing, b

Tim, composite means the combination of 2 or more components, no matter what the components are. A cake is a composite of all of its ingredients. You can't have just a graphite rod without it being a composite. It needs resin to bind the graphite together at a minimun. Now you have 2 components, hence a composite.
