Here's my method, not saying it's the best, just what works good for me: 1) I bought a set of mandrels from Andy Dear years ago, one in each size(I do not think he sells directly anymore, but you can buy through several dealers he now uses). 2) I select the mandrel that is a bit smaller than the blank but as close as possible. For example a 3/8" mandrel to fit on a blank location that

Jeff: Look at the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section at number 20. I have been using this method with great success for years. I like the feel of EVA grips on bass rods and they are they are much easier and faster to apply / more durable in many ways / and less expensive than cork grips. Sincerely Lee

I have built two of the lmb784's and they are without a doubt the best rods I have ever used on bass. I use them for jigs, worms, brush hogs, etc. My hooking percentage and catch rate went up significantly with these rods... they are very sensitive and you can really "hammer" them with the hookset. My only lament is that lamiglas stopped making the 6-6 length. I am not real tall and

Has anyone found a good way to ream a metal winding check. It seems that I frequently end up with an inside diameter slightly smaller than needed. I can usually get the job done with a dremel and small stone, but it is very time consuming, the metal gets hot, etc. Seems like there ought to be better way. Yeah I know, the best would be to buy the right size to fit, but you would almost hav

I bought a set of the Lamar mandrels several years ago. I am not a metallurgist, but to me they appear to be made of hardened carbon steel. They are polished, but will rust if you abuse them. Overall they have worked very well, and I doubt I will ever need to buy another set. Lee...

I have spent hours moving guides around and test casting to try and get maximum distance. At most, I could get a extra couple of feet between best and worst setup, but even that was suspect as the variance between casts with the same guide spacing was anywhere from 0 to 7 or 8 feet. It is hard to make 10 or more casts exactly the same in order to get a good average that you can then compare to

Doug: Great information here. Confirms what I was thinking. I just got back from a boat show (was working a booth promoting our bass club) and was looking at some of the split grip factory rods at the vendor next to us. The threads on the reel seat were not trimmed, and the rear grips were all 3 - 4 inches long. End result is that my "pointer" finger would not be able to touch th

Thanks for the help. Now I want to try a split grip in combination with the sprial wrap, as long as I can keep the handle length reasonable. I have not done either on a bass rod yet, so I will use a less expensive blank. I believe there is plenty of information on spiral wraps. Does anyone have any advice on the spit grip: I plan on using a fuji exposed blank seat. Otherwise I would assume

They seem to be more popular now, but I was wondering what the performance advantages are. Most casting rods are "tip" heavy and standard, but "heavier", rear grips tend to help balance the rod. Hence it would seem if you lighten the rear grip substantially, then you would have to lengthen it to keep the same balance point. Most rear grips are about as long as I like anyway

The problem here is that the registration screen prompts for a username, not for first and last name. The majority of bad registrations would go away if the screen prompted as follows: username _____________ (Note: you must enter your real first and last name: John Doe)

I am going to build a rod for a friend in my bass club. He is looking for a casting rod to throw Texas Rigged, 7" or smaller plastic worms with a 3/16 or 1/4 oz weight. This would be used more for casting as opposed to pitching. A standard mag bass in a 12/20 or 12/25 xtra fast power/action would seem a bit too much for this so I was thinking that a lighter action mag bass or even a spinn
