Ditto to what Gary said about the Hole Saw. I have one dedicated for cutting rings that I have a piece of MDF in to keep the cut rings from getting stuk in the hole saw. I.E if your hole saw is 1 inch deep cut a piece of 3/4 inch MDF and leave it inside the hole saw. This makes it much easier to remove form the Hole saw

Just a personal choice but I go down to 2s. I live in Alaska, and build a lot of fly rods and have found if you taper down to single foot 3s you will get better performance from the rod. I have had nothing but rave reviews from people I build for. For a 7wt I would go 16, 12 double foot, the 6, 4,4,3,3,3,2,2 single foot. Thats just my 10 cents.

I always use single foot, just because it saves a bit of time. I am not sure one is better than the other. Depending on the size of the fly rod you could try using smaller sized single foots all the way up the rod. Hmmm Got me thinking now....lol Let us know what you get worked out.,

Greetings, Hopefully everyone has made it home safely from the ICRBE. I am curious if anyone has tried to adapt a Renzetti thread carage to fit a Batson power wrapper? I would like to own a Renzetti lathe, but its just not a posability for me right now. It almost looks like you could swap the bases without too much trouble? If there has been a previous thread on this I couldn't find it. All

Don, I can feel your pain with the airport in Philly. I have been through there 3 times, and all 3 times something has gone wrong. Once I got lost trying to find the Budget car rental return. That is NOT the area of town you want to get lost in. I was on my way back to the airport when I saw the Budget shuttle van going the other direction. I flipped a U turn and followed him to the lot. I would be careful about using the cardboard triangle. I know people that have had rods damaged using those. PVC has never let me down.

Just a FYI. Being from Alaska whenever I get down to the Lower 48 I take advantage of my time and visit woodturning/woodworking establishments. I have flown back on 2 occasions with new turning tools in my luggage without any trouble. I have lost a few lighters though FWIW.

Phil from the sounds of it you need a shop to be doing your rodbuilding, and now is the perfect time to bring the subject up. Don't be shy about it, when your down on all four cleaning that spot up just keep going on about all the work you have to go through to get that spot up. You will need to finish each gripe off about how a dedicated workspace would prevent this from happening. Honest

Kevin, My name is Kirk I live in and fish Alaska and have spent many weekends on the Kenai Penensula. I fish only Batsons, and that is all I have built on in many years. Either one of the RX6 or RX7 will do you right. I consider the RX6's to be the workhorses of their lineup. I have sold quite a few of those with a couple coming back asking for a second rod "Just in case" the

Where does time go? Last weekend we had the 3rd Rodbuilding Workshop/Gathering of the year for the Alaska Branch of the NERBS. Going into this event we have taught 3 people how to build rods, It was a small group of 4 of us 3 regulars, and we had a new participant, one of my neighbors who also turns out to be a rodbuilder. What a small world. I started a demonstration of Diamond/Chevron wra

Blame it on "Long Hair & Rcokn Roll". I consider myself fortunate I have short hair (20 years of getting it cut every other week makes it hard to grow very long). I am also blessed in the fact that I have a hard time finding sleeves long enough for me, let alone long enough to get caught in a lathe. I was working potato harvest one year long ago. I saw someone run his hand thro

I have messed around with coloring Birch Bark. The results were better than I expected, but not to the level I want. Unfortunately I never got to finish with it. If you can die or stain the individual bark rings you will have a bit better sucess. I think if you can find a way to put it under pressure or in a vaacuum the results would be better. It will be a while before I have time to mess

Ray I think this is a wonderful project to undertake. I wish I could be there to help you out. There has to be a way to get this worked into the VA. For the VETS that need something to take their minds of everyday stress's it would be perfect. There is probably a bunch of ways that it can be worked into rehab programs for the VETS. If there is any way I can help from Alaska let me know.

I have used allthread, and clamped betweed boards as stacked between boards and parked the 4wheeler on top. Sometimes it seems as though the bark takes on a darker hue after its been soaked. If thats the case you can lighten up the color with some bleach.

I don't know much abour Birch bark, but this is what I do know. Most definately get it off the log as soon as possible. Bark is most easily harvested in the spring. I think it has to do with the time of year that they harvest the sap to make birch syrup. And for whatever reason birch bark seems to come off easier on humid days or that is when I have had the most luck. The type of birch tree

I would love to be wrapping. I made a silly promise though.........I promised we would have the new house set up before I set my shop up. I am keeping track of the days the GF is "Too Tired" to make it to the new house after work. I will play them against her when my shop space is cleared out a bit more.......lol We stored our household goods in my shop to give them time to finish
