I would definitely take a look at Batson/Rainshadow blanks. You didn't specify spinning or baitcasting. The Batson IP843 is a popular blank around the Houston/Galveston Bay system. I prefer the 844 only because it gives you just alittle bit more lead in your pencil. Sometimes that can be a comfort when fishing around jack crevalle. To say that they can be stubborn on light tackle is an understat

Something Ive tried recently and had good success with::::; I made some scrapers out of plexiglas. Lexan would probably work well also. Using a table saw with a sharp blade , I cut the plexi into strips about 12 inches long and 1 inch wide. Using it like a spokeshave, I use the fresh cut edge as a scraper . It worked very well on heat softened epoxy., and the chance of blank damage is almost non

I've talked to 2 different guys lately about an inexpensive lathe. Just something for shaping grips. Both of them said Grizzly was back-ordering the little "Hobby Lathe" until???????

I think hypalon is probably a more durable material and I use it when I want just a single color grip on a heavier rod. EVA is much easier to work (sand and shape) than hypalon and a bit lighter. When using spacers or diagonal insert spacers to dress up foam grips, I'll use EVA only. For me the finished cut on EVA is much cleaner when doing diagonal cuts, and is a lot easier to shape when making

Actually the majority of the rods that St.Croix sells are done locally (Park Falls,Wi.) by outwrappers. Independents who are paid by the piece and build at home.. (so I'll bet they can zing some guides on in a hurry) They've got inspectors that sign-off on the outwrappers work. When it comes to finishing, they do that at the factory. The Flex Coat photo is actually the environment controlled fin

Thanks for all the replies guys. I guess maybe I should get on the phone more and not so much the keyboard. I'll give Dave Lyons or Karen Hapka a ring.........George F....Have you tried the Coats and Clark (teddy bear)? If so, did it maintain a good color contrast after finish? I'm familiar with the precautions of using embroidery/sewing threads. Is it 40 wt?......Thanks again everybody,,,Jim

I've looked online with no results, but I'm looking for a 2 color thread like the classic twist that Gudebrod discontinued. Their Trimar is all metallic and a color. Does anybody offer 2 color twists ? Lt.brown/black or orange/ black in particular. Any ideas? Thanks.

I have a JET mini(JML1014) that I added the PSI VS motor kit to. I have the bed extension as well so the tailstock end was sorta outta the question. I mounted to the underside of the stand top. It kept it close to the action and somewhat protected from dust/chips. The only downside was the on/off switch is side to side motion instead of up/down. The plug-in power connection from the controls to t

I added the Turncrafter vari-speed kit to my JET mini(1014) with very little adaptation. In fact the Jet conversion instructions were with the kit. In a nutshell, you don't use the motor plate from Turncrafter. You remove your existing motor and adjustment plate and drill your plate to match the new vari-speed motor. It requires you to be fairly precise on where the holes are drilled but nothing

Like most folks who visit this board, I've had dealings with a lot of the sponsors here, and I can't think of one instance where I was'nt satisfied. I had an experience yesterday that I'd like to point out.:: In mid -December I placed an internet order with Anglers Workshop. I promptly rec'd a confirmation of order and a short time later rec'd a shipping notice. With the busy holidays I had forgo

I've been hearing that more anglers are opting for repairs and rewraps/rebuilds as opposed to complete new builds. At least in my area that seems to be the case. Same thing with reels. More cleaning and repairs, less new sales.

The whole staff there are just great folks. From the production floor all the way to the Schluters offices. Jason Bruner is one the nicest guys you could ever meet.

Mel, like the rest, I recommend the 3jaw setup, but the chuck isn't the only difference. Cpw's come as a rod wrapper or a rod lathe. The rod lathe has the 3jaw and the reduction drive to give more torque for turning/shaping cork or foam. I have owned other direct drive machines and don't have anything bad to say about any of them. But I bought the CPW lathe about a year or so ago and I really do

I think shape has a lot to do with how slippery something may feel. Hammer and hatchet handles have been slick for many years and certainly have been used by sweaty hands. Recently I had opportunity to use some heavy baitcasting gear that had elegant turned(very slick) wood handles, with Fuji trigger seats. After a few hours of casting rather large lures, I was glad that the trigger was there, as

I got a few spool boxes from the hobby store in the sewing section. They have lift out trays with pegs for each spool and are spaced perfect for the 1oz. (524) spools of Gudebrod and just deep enough for Madeira. Each one holds 40spools. I still have and use some of the plano's but I like these better. Down side is they are $12 each. Very clear plastic so reading thread sizes is easy.

That is a great price for for tapered eva regardless of color. Allen, if you don't find the colors your'e looking for with Mark, look at Johnny's Pond. Their site shows quite a few colors that I"ve not seen very often. I wish there was a source for eva/hypalon that had a larger color palette. I believe Billy V had mentioned some foam (possibly eva)yoga blocks that were available in many colo

I bought one of the brands mentioned above. Do yourself a favor and get the VS now. You will want it later, when you DO decide that you want to try a little woodturning(and you will).

Scott, I'm sure like most builders this won't be the last "uh-oh" on a finish job. Progressively finer grits will look better but I don't think you'll ever achieve the high gloss of a fresh coat of finish. Not without some sort of polishing and considering the effort to polish up to a gloss, another light coat of finish would be easier IMO. I would add that it's better to give a proble

I have tried the samples ( which are almost gone) and w/o a doubt, it will be the one I use from now on. The color retention is superb IMO,especially on lighter shades and black STAYS black. I've only limited use of it, but enough to know Andy's on to something here. Since I like to use black mixed in with brighter colors fairly often, I would buy it even if that was all it did well(blacks) but f

If you decide to go with the CPW, by all means ,upgrade to the "rod lathe "as it comes with the 3jaw chuck and reduction drive pulley system . This gives more torque when shaping grips. The "L" at the end of the model number means it's a rod lathe. I've had the 189L for a while now and really do like it. Since this is the first ready made wrapper I've owned, I can't comment

I think it would be a great idea for just that purpose. I've been wrapping tiptops with white on every build for a long time. I do alot of Gulf coast pier fishing and it helps to have something to catch your eye when things get a little crowded at night.

While the subject is reamers, let me ask if anyone is aware of any "ready Made" reamers that would be suitable for Eva/Hypalon. I'm asking because my blank diameter is about .990" at the butt grip.(heavy surfcasting blank) I want to add some eva foam spacers to all 3 sections of the grip(1fore,2 split butt) and I'm afraid of failure at the glue joints when stretching foam during
