John still owes me money from a previous transaction. He hasn't been returning my phone calls or emails for about 3 months now so I finally just gave up. If he still lives in Airdrie, maybe I'll go and bang on his door for you David. Anyway, I would certainly be remiss not to mention the spectacular customer service that I get from Andy Sneddon of Custom Rodbuilders (Rodbuilder Supplies, on

Those of you who have built their own rod turners, what have you used for a chuck? I don't really want to buy one, I like to build things like this. Shanon

when I use FC lite I put a little dab under the part of the guide (snake) that comes up from under the wrap to seal it. Since PG is quite a bit thinner how do I accomplish this particular task? Shanon

I've been using the U-40 stuff with a drying time from 2-8 hours depending on the urgency of the build. No problems so far, but I know some guys here wouldn't suggest such a short dy time in between CP and epoxy (I use FC lite). Shanon

Here's my problem. I'm using Guebrod Goldenrod size A to wrap a rod. I CP the wrap (it looks like an evenly distributed coating), wait for it to dry, then finish it with FC Lite. Comes out patchy looking (some areas of the wrap are darker than others. Has happened a couple of time and I need some advice. Haven't had problems with any of the other colors I use. Thanks in advance.

how does everyone go about achieving consistent guide wrap lengths? I get mine pretty close, close enough that only another rodbuilder might see the difference. I use the eyeball technique. Any tips???

I have been using a product called Weldbond to put on my grips. It is a white glue type product and I haven't had any problems with the grip loosening and if I want it off the rod I just put it in a pot of boiling water. Shanon

I'm building up a rod using Gudebrod Red slik. On the butt wrap I want to have the inscription under the finished (FC lite) thread, but have bright, color-preserved thread as trim bands on either side. Can I wrap the trim, CP it then wrap the main wrap finish it, then wrap the other trim wrap. Will I be able to get them nice and close together? Are there any better ways to do this? Shanon

alright, I have discovered in a previous post that finding a short heavy weight fly rod is next to impossible. What if I took a 9 foot, 9weight 5 piece rod and dropped the butt section. would the action end up being around a 7 weight'ish. Is there any way to have a really good idea of what the action will be other than to build it up and try it out? I need some good feedback guys. th

Just like it says, preferably 4 piece but I won't be picky. Also price is sort of a factor. If someone could steer me in the right direction, I would be grateful. Shanon

Just picked up a DC matte blank. I plan on using the Gudebrod rod varnish on the rod for a glossy finish. My question is thus...do I varnish after all the guides are on or before? Shanon

Just wanted to let you know that I got the privilege of dealing with Andy Sneddon at Rodbuilder Supplies over the Easter weekend. I talked (mostly listened to some great info) with him for probably an hour and a half on a Saturday morning and not at any point was he anything less than a wonderful host. I also picked up some top-notch products from him. I would highly recemmend Andy for any of

go to an art supply store and they should be able to set you up with acrylic inks in whatever color you want. This is the method I'm going to use from now on as the gel pens just aren't fine enough for my liking. I don't think you even need to put a fixative over it prior to finishing. An off the topic question Mark. How's the lightweight reel coming? Shanon

I just finished the Tiger Eye 7" 4 piece. I have a Rio Classic 4 weight on it. Love it!! Caught a couple nice little browns when I had it out for the first time this weekend (John, it has guides from your store). Still, I think it's more rod than I need on the streams I built it for. I'm gonna build me one of those DC Sig III's. Of course that blank will cost me more than what the whol

I want to shorten an 8' glass fly blank that I have (to about six and a half, about). I know I can cut some material of the butt, but is there anyway to shorten the blank and keep the sections the same length? Shanon

Ed, I just finished a rod with bronze metallic 5 turn trim bands on all the guide wraps. It took about a dozen tries to figure out a way to do them with having them slip off, or unravel. What I finally settled on was starting the wrap as you would a normal wrap with a bit of extra tension on the thread. Hold onto the wrap by pinching it against the blank until the original tag end has been

I was wondering if the ferrules for fiberglass flyrods need any extra work, such as metal ferrules, or are they just wrapped like the ferrules on graphite rods? thanks, Shanon
