I couldn't come up with the words "doodads" or "gizmos", but I think the one mentioned by Dennis above may be it. Thanks for the help, I'll google it and see what I get.

A few years ago when I was active (semi at least) on this board I was told about a catalogue similar to "all electronics.com" that was full of all kinds of gadgets of different sorts. Sort of like a surplus catalogue. Does this mean anything to any one? If anyone can figure out from my ramblings what it is, I would appreciate the information. Thanks Fred Murphy, sometimes AKA "Mur

After a six year hiatus from rod building, I'm going to re-do the guides on an old rod. My problem is I have a few BSVHG (Fuji hardaloy I think) guides left from previous building. I'd like to use what I have, but don't have enough to finish the job, and I can't find that guide in the Mudhole Catalog. Is there a guide that would be similar that would work with these old guides? Doesn't need to b

I've read the articles on Refinishing a rod blank and on the water break free process. I'm putting new guides and extending the butt on a very old rod, one that I'll use just for down rigger fishing for trout and kokanee. I don't want to put the money for a high end automobile urethane into this rod, has anyone had any experience in a color coat other than what the article talks about? Any help w

Thanks for all the help! A friend needed a few guides and wanted to make sure they were compatible with braided line, so now I'll be able to give him a few.

I have some guides I have had for years and don't remember what they are, or who I got them from, hopefully someone here can help? They are a single foot spinning guide, with ( I think) a ceramic insert. They have a "number" of BSVHG08 thru 30. I know the 08 thru 30 is the size, but need to know what they are. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Murf

I'll have to look into those magnetic baitcasters, still don't have much faith in my learning ability!

Wow! It's hard to believe that! Makes sense though, the blank insert should make it as strong as before, might give it a try.
Thanks, Murf

Started a rod about three years ago, got side tracked by some issues and am trying to get back to it. Started out planning for it to be a casting rod, but have decided I'll never learn to use a level wind. I have the trigger reel seat and complete handle installed. My question is, can the trigger be cut, or ground off so I can use a spinning reel with it? I'm not really concerned about appearance

Speaking from experience, just a slight allergy problem will make the dust problem about a hundred times worse. Some of it is about as hazardous as about anything you can breath in. Play it safe and always wear a mask.

I'm glad that Duane brought this up. I've been under the impressino that a water break free surface was necessary under the guide wraps. Do you know what a pain in the fingers it is to get that surface on ONLY the area that will be under the wrap?? My next guide wrapping job will be much easier now!

Don't try to blame all the USPS problems on the employees, they are the most dedicated bunch of people in getting the mail delivered to the correct address, whatever size, shape, improperly packaged, poorly addressed, wrong zip code, or sent without suffecient protection ( insurance, "signature required", Certified or Registered.) Not saying that Phinla did not do everything right, b

Ditto what Putter said. I've done a couple of spinning rods using all Gudebrod metallics and had no problems. I also alcohol wipe my hands several times during wrapping and had no problems with the finish adhering.

I agree with Stan G's post. I took my boat on it's home made trailer with the home made suspension from a 1936 Chevy front end , six hole hub, rusted out to the max. Got the complete deal, leaf springs, all the brackets to mount it to the frame, complete six hole hub kit with new spindles, bearings, races, seals, lug nuts, all the instructions for mounting, plus loads of other hints from the staf

Go to your favorite sporting goods store and get a bottle of "Tangle Free". Highly recommended by Bill Dance, and me too. A few drops on your reel spool and the twist will virtually disappear.

Sam: I have built two rods using Gudebrod metallic and it worked just fine. I added a different color trim wrap of the same thread and it really added a nice look.

I don't think there is a part of the process I don't enjoy thoroughly. From picking the out components, to putting on the final finish, then making the first cast with and finding that it all came together like I expected. It is all a thrill.

Mike: Thanks for the thoughts on using them in rod holders, I can see where it could be a problem, especially if you have a big fish and on it is putting a lot of pressure on the rod when your'e trying to get the rod out of the holder.

Thanks for all the ideas on this. They all makes sense to me, especially Robert's idea of his forearm fitting comfortably between the two sections. I may give it a try when I build myself a steelhead rod.

I have seen several references to these and seen a few pictures of them. I am wondering what is the advantage to them? Not to put down anyones work, the ones I've seen are very well done, but they seem rather ugly to me.

Streve:
I would like to be good enough at this rod building stuff to be able to move from one step to another without having to stop and figure out what (and how) I need to do for the next. I suppose when I get few more rods under my belt, that knowledge will come.
Merry Christmas to all,
Fred Murphy
