Hi All: Been awhile since I have been here and built a fly rod. I have a friend who wants me to build him a 3wt, 6', 3 or 4 piece fly rod. Anyone suggest a good blank and components? He is willing to spend in the $200 range. Thanks, Harold

Hi All: Been awhile since I visited the forum. I want to build my wife a new 5wt, fast action rod. Last year I built a client a TFO rod and really like the blank. Any suggestions on which for their various blanks I should consider? She is a very accomplished fly fisher. We dry fly fish only. While cost is always an issue, I don't mind spending more ($100-125) on the blank if necessary. Than

Hi All: We are almost exclusively dry fly fishers when it comes to fresh water. We just returned from spending the month on a small river in Missouri. The first several weeks of the month the rivers there were blown out so dry fly fishing was out. However, the last week of May saw some really great dry fly fishing. I make all our rods (both salt water bait casting and fly rod) and am interest

Hi All: Have a friend who wants me to build him a four piece 3wt 7'9" rod using the TFO Finess blank. The blank is dark olive green. I have several questions. (1) He wants single foot guides. What guides would you suggest? (2) What color(s) combination would you suggest for the wraps? (3) Any suggestions on the reel seat and handle? (4) Any other suggestions? Thanks, Harold

I have a client who wants a rod like the TFO he has found at Bass Pro. It is a 3 wt four piece rod, 7ft 6 in in the TFO Pro Series line model number TF03764P. After looking at the TFO site, it does not appear they sell the TF03764P as a blank only. Anyone know if this blank is available? If not anyone know a comparable blank? I have looked in the CCS Data Site, but it contains data for just a f

I have built several 2 wt 2 piece 6'6" rods (rainbow/forecast) but have a client who wants a 2 piece that has more pieces (wants the unassembled length to be shorter than the 3'3" of the ones I build.) Does anyone know of a shorter (unassembled) blank? Thx.

I just built (and tried out) a couple of two weight. They are only two piece but since the rods are only 6'6" they are certainly travel capable. The rods are a Forecast RX6 F662-2 6'6" 2 piece and a Rainbow RX7 IF662 6"6" 2 piece. These rods are ideal for small streams and having just been able to test them out they are great (and really fun since they are so flexible.) They

I would take Bill Stevens advice. At his suggestion (and guidance) I built a couple of Lamiglass IMP 844 popping rods. Fished with them just last month down on the intercoastal at Rockport. Caught my limit of keeper Redfish several days (and overall during the two weeks must have caught more than 80 smaller redfish). The largest I caught was a 28" 9 pounder. Also must have caught at least 50

I am looking for two light weight, relatively inexpensive fly reels( for number two line) for a couple of rods I am making using IF662 RAINSHADOW RX7 2PC blanks. Any suggestions on brand, model and place to buy? I have found the Pflueger Automatic 1195 for $22.95. Anyone know anything about this reel?

I want to buy two aluminum tubes for my 9'0' 4 piece fly rods. They need to be slightly larger in diameter than the standard 2" tube since the rods I will be storing in them have larger stripping guides than my lighter rods. Any suggestions for a source?

I notice Dan Craft is no longer listed as a sponsor. Has he opted out? I understand he will be attending the show and have seen him on the ad above the forum postings. Hope he has not quit as a sponsor!

I just finished building the Dan Craft FT908-4 (but have not had a chance to use it -- hopefully this next week when I go bay fishing in the gulf) as well as two Dan Craft FT904-4's. The 904 fishes great!. However, one thing you might want to consider. I carefully measured all three of the Dan Craft rods using the CCS method and discovered all three rods have a significantly higher CCS rating tha

So I would like to make some rod decals with my HP Photosmart C4180 inkjet printer. I have the proper clear paper for waterslides. I have attempted to use both the standard HP ink and their photo quality ink to no avail. The label looks great on the paper but when transferred to the rod, it basically disappears. Also it does not make any difference as to what color I print the label. I understand

As a slight deviation to the thread topic, how accurate is CCS for a completed rod? I recently measured four fly rods I completed and got some surprising results. I wish I had measured the blanks before I finished the rods. In my tests (and I took great pains to do the measurements properly) here are the results: manufacturer's rating (M) and CCS. (1) M=5, CCS=5.94, AA=65; (2) M=4, CCS=8.4, AA=78

Thanks all for the tips. I had not thought about it being too dry in the room. With the relatively cold weather, I am sure the inside of the house is fairly dry. I will try getting some moisture in the air, wiping with a soft brush and then using the blue painter's tape if anything is left on.

Ok, I know this question has been addressed numerous times (I have searched) but I am still getting a few very small "specs" between coats. I smooth these out between coats. I have hibernated in a room with no fans, people, etc. to minimize dust, etc. I wipe the dried coat with a dry coffee filter prior to applying the next coat. Is there any liquid I can apply on some type of light

Jerry (and others): Thanks for the great comments and suggestions. Jerry, you are correct in that I used the wrong terminology (it takes a while for an ole fly fisherman to learn new terms!). I did not mean a "true" pistol grip, but rather confusing it with a trigger on a seat. Regarding the exposed blank reel seats, I have never seen one so for my first casting rod attempt, I had be

Thanks to folks on this forum, I am down to the last strokes for determining the blank and components for my first saltwater rod. This rod will be used for trout and redfish in the Texas inter-coastal. I have settled on a Rainshadow IP844F (7', 2 piece, -17w line, 1/4-3/4 w lure), Alps Lite SS316 sf guides (12,10,8,7,7,6, 6,6,6),XBPPLT tip-top. I will be spiral wrapping these. Comments on the

Jason: While there are lots more folks on this forum who know more about rod building than I, I have been fly fishing for a long time but have built only a few rods. I did not understand any of it either until I read the Common Cents article (click on the link on the left.) While you might have to study it some (I did), once you understand it, you will see how to measure rod performance, etc.

After following one of the recent threads regarding lighter fly rods, I have decided to build a couple of Rainbow RX7 IF662 fly rods. We normally fish with 9' 4and 5 weight rods but it sounds like a smaller, lighter 6' 6" rod would be just right for wading when we fish for smaller trout. So my question: What components should I get for these rods, including the guides (stripper plus 6 oth

I just finished reading Russ Gooding's "Executing Feather Inlays". He recommends using an "acrylic" CP. What brands and where can I obtain such a beast? The two CP's I have are both water based.
