the Sage will be the most powerful in that line weight. The North Fork will be the most pleasant and easiest to cast. The TFO will be the cheapest but also the heaviest. You have to decide for yourself. What someone else likes may not be what you like.

These blanks were once a great value but lately they have been having trouble with their ferrules. prices are no longer all that great compared against some of the newer stuff from Batson and St Croix. Might want to look outside TFO these days IMHO. Sure wish they had not changed the blanks the way they did.

the solvent based color preserves went out years ago due to their tendency to crack and check. They go on fine and look good for a while but they end up cracking and checking over time. Dump the solvent based product and go with a water based type.

in the thread below about steelhead rods Tom mentions his New Concept System. I have seen in other places on the internet where other rod builders have noted that Tom is not the one that actually came up with the system. They say it was Fuji and some have proven with older literature that it WAS Fuji that came up with the system. Where oh where has honesty gone in todays rod building world.......

take the screw out of the bottom and take the Renzetti uprights to a shop and have them plated. Would not cost much. You want to keep in mind that Clemens is long gone so you cannot get new ones from them anyway.

TFO rods are inexpensive for a reason. junk ferrules. Stay away if you want a quality rod. You get what you pay for!

Spigot ferrules are not bad but have been getting a bum rap due to the poor ferrules on the TFO rods. It is the WEAK link of the TFO fly blanks.

YOur going to be duly embarrassed by this RANT when you learn that the blank is supposed to be that way. The gray paint is actually raw graphite that is put there to make a wearable ferrule system. It's designed to keep the ferrule snug as the male and female parts wear over time and use. The uneven "paint" lines on the male ends do not matter because you are to wrap that side just l

20. Re: CP Problems
You can pour Flex-Coat CP on the thread and it will dry right. Threadmaster not so much. If you have it on to heavy it will dry lumpy and this will equate to a lumpy finish. Use two very thin coats. Threadmaster thread coating is fantastic but they fell short with they're color preserver.

who's the judge of what's correct and what is not? If it works and your happy then it's all good. If it doesn't work then you just don't do it again and everything is still good.

Paul. if it works for you then it works. This is CUSTOM rod building, there are very few hard and fast rules. you'll worry yourself mad if you care too much about what others think.

If your confident in your abilities enough to build rods on a professional level then it should be "your way". If your already building a quality product that is in demand and you see a potential additional market then you don't need to and shouldn't be asking "am I doing it right".
Dave, if your selling your rods and customers want more then your good. that's the bottom

you are right on. I think that we sometimes get so concerned about the opinions and impressions put upon us by those that are "considered" experts, whether it be because they have written a book, build rods professionally, or have 1000 posts on a website, that we lose sight of the whole point of building custom fishing rods : To take full advantage of the unique properties of t

Find a builder in your local area who is set up tot turn grips and invite yourself over. Lathe work requires a hands on education. Books and videos only get you so far and thats a very short trip.
I will give credit to andy's video. Very informative but it will not replace the real thing.

OK. I stand corrected. I wasn't aware of the possibilities until I just went to Swamplands website. Decal Connection is the best but I believe that Swampland will be getting some of my business now.

no offense, but it seems to me it's just as easy to give decal connection a call and have the label in your mailbox three days later.
