They are both about 5' 6", including the wooden handles, the ferrule is about 30" up, not quite the center point. The ferrule is probably chromed brass like you said. They are both pretty heavy rods approx. 3/4" taper down to about 1/4" roughly usning my eye, no measurements taken.
The Chesepeake is a tad lighter weight than the other and has three guides plus tip about 2

Yep that's it.... The rod is about 5 feet long and only has one double guide. The tip top is missing, but I was told it had a double tip top too..this was a trolling rod, and I g

I had a friend show up with a couple of cool old split can rods. I have never actually had my hands on this type of rod before. One is a Chesepeake, and the other has the name decal scratched, so I am not sure the maker. I think it is a Schiggn??
I am going to restore these rods, but should they be wall decorations? I am going to re-do the Chesepeake for my friend and reinstall the original g

My friend was given a couple of old rods from a young man whose grandfather is in poor health. One was a St. Croix, and the other looks old, but still in ok shape.... I was thinking of doing a refurb just for a wall ornament???
I was hoping someone could give me a little background on the rod...... It is a white glass blank, the rod come in two pieces at the foregrip/reelseat connection....

A friend brought over a yardsale find.... An old Offshore Angler rod with one broken roller guide. The rod has the Offshore Angler decal, but the other decal with the info about what type of rod is missing (scratched off)...
It has aftco roller guides (not HD) on it. It has a Stuarts aluminum unibutt, and appears to be an all glass blank..... The tip size is a 22, and it 6'7" long.

I have not made one of these handles yet, but have been considering it. Scott Throop has been making this type of handle for a while now, and I think it is some sort of ruberrized cork used for roller blading floors.
A quick thought for clamping the grip while it dries... I was going to go to Home Depot and get a long piece of all thread two large washers and two nuts..... glue it up and cl

That is a prettylight saltwater rod.... single wrap should be sufficient... I would not add the bulk for a second layer.
I have built the 270's.... I use a underwrap of A, and a single guide wrap of D as suggested above....

11. Re: Aftcoat??
Thanks for the feedback...
It is definitely the hardner, and the bottle is 3/4 full. I did the Microwave trick twice and it seemed better when it was warm, but as soon as it cooled it is bad again.
I should have known better, but I used some on a rod, and I can see tiny little bumps from the crystalization... when it dries I will fine sand and re-coat with TM......

14. Aftcoat??
I bought some Aftcoat less than a year ago, and it is kept in my house that is usually between 65 and 72 degrees. My rod finish is kept on a shelf, so it should be room temperature. I have been mixing Aftcoat and TM, 50/50 with equal parts of each.... tonight when I added the aftcoat hardner it seemed very milky and almost like it had tiny crystals in it..... I figured it must be a lttle cold,

I have ordered a Calstar 760L to build as a jig rod. Anyone who has a jig stick similar in weight with some static guide spacing infor the help would be great. I will do my own testing, but some starting numbers would be great.
Thanks!!

Thank you all for the great info. The rod is for a Stella 10,000 FA, the reel is capable of producing 65lbs of drag..... No man can handle that much drag, but the reel can deliver it..... The line will be 60# braid and up. It will be built for a guy who I have built some other rods for and he hopes to take it to Australia at some point.
Thanks again, anymore input is appreciated.....

I am looking at building a rod for a Shimano Stella reel for heavy jigging gear. I had posted quite a while back and based upon Simon Oakley's recommendation I think I will use the Calstar 760L as a blank choice. Next I need to select a good set of guides to match....
Any thoughts on guides and sizing would be well appreciated!! Any other pointers are appreciated. This will be my first ro

When doing a cord wrapped handle do you usually bond it to the rod? I have been mixing up a bit of U-40 rodbond and then spinning the cord on as a handle.... just wondering if most do that or if a simple cord wrap without the rod bond is done? The cord seems to lock itself into place, so the rod bond might not be needed.
Thanks!

I am part of another site that has a small group of rod builders (mostly novice) and a few with good skills. I am a novice and lack the experience to fully draw my own conclusions. This site has enough experience to help me form my own opinions.

I have the Angler's Workshop custom power wrapper with upgraded chuck, and dryer motor. I don't have anything to compare to as I have not owned the others, but I love it. Sure made my wrapping go to the next level that's for sure.....

Not all spiral wraps are simple spiral..... take a llok at the Acid rod web site. It will explain the different types. Some rod builder make the transition slowly, rather than the simple spiral method.

Thank you all for the comments.
I went down last night and applied finish to a Seeker 210 I had just completed. Eight guides with underwrap, butt section from last guide to the butt wrapp (18") , and the tip...... I mixed 15 cc of finish looked at the clock and started.......
I am just slow..... 34 minutes..... not racing, just steady work. I will try different brushes, and a lit

Bill, I am applying the finish on my Angler's Workshop Deluxe Power Wrapper with self centering lathe chuck, using the foot pedal to move the rod at low RPM's.
I then move it to the low rpm dryer for levelling and drying....... I use Flex Coat high build lately, but I also use Thread Master as well. The application brush is not big, it is the yellow handle flex coat brushes.......

Thanks again, I am not getting bad results.... good clear, level finish on my rods.... no bubbles.
In 30 minutes the epoxy is still flowing pretty good.
I usually don't heat it befor I mix it, because I have found if it is thicker (around room temp 70 +/-) it still levels out nicely, but doesn't flow to fast and drip.
My biggest reason for the question is about time savings and n

29. Re: Slick Butts
I use fiberglass drywall mess. 2" wide with U-40 rodbond......
I will make about 5 arbors side by side or with minimal space between them depending on if it is the10" or the 12" slick butt.

Thank you Tom for the feedback and no offense taken... That is why I asked the question..... I am going to put finish on a rod tonight (after I finish wrapping it, so I am going to try and just put it on and get moving to see how it goes..... I do not care to be waisting time. I have seen your gallery and your work is incredible, so I don't doubt what you are saying....
