Building a 7'2" spinning rod for a Daiwa 2500 reel (spool is 49 mm). I'll be throwing all mono or fluoro 6 - 8 lb test. Normally I'd start with a 25 regular height guide (TKLSG 25) for the stripper. So what size should I start with for a high frame Torzite guide(TKLTG-H), and what sizes for the reduction train? I'll use 4s for the running guides. Also, since I don't use low profile ba

Hey Nathan, I stumbled across the ISB 841 about 5 years ago. Normally, I wouldn't consider a "1" power rod to even build, but one of the Batsons (I think it was Kerry) literally put one of these blanks and then a finished rod in my hands at a show. I immediately knew it would make a nice rod for light lure and light line applications. It does not have any of the mid blank mushines

Nathan, You're talking some of my favorite technique. I use the 7' version of the blank below from Batson. It's not purple, but it is outstanding for what you're doing. It has a significant amount of backbone for a "1" power rod, but the tip is soft enough for throwing light baits and handling lighter lines. And the price is right on target for your project. Well for something a little brighter without being too loud, try Gudebrod Classic Twist - Red & Black. You can trim it to match your guides or your reel. I use CP on mine. I've also heard that Classic Twist Orange & Black looks great on these blanks, but I haven't tried that one yet. The main thing is - Have Fun! Glenn

Summer Moon has wooden hosels, if those will work for what you're doing. Glenn

Keith, Give Neal's Fishing Products a shout. I just got a bunch of rod blank extensions from him, and he's got the sizes that will fit a Musky blank. Glenn

I started to ask if you had finished it yet, and now I hear that it's already seen water and fish!!! Glad to see it's being put to good use. All of my blanks are standing in the corner begging for handles, guides, thread, finish, water, & fish and in that order. I checked Versitex's website, and they have those blanks listed, but I'd check with them just to be sure. Good luck with tha

Finally about to roll a couple of the new St. Croix SCIV blanks in the cobalt blue color, and I was just wondering what thread color combos anyone has used and liked. I haven't decided if I'll go subtle or flashy with the thread, so I'm open to all suggestions. I'm using a TN handle and Fuji SIC guides - gunsmoke color. Thanks in advance for all replies, and thank you Tom Kirkman for such a wo

I'll throw one more at you. Rice Threads two-tone red/black (7832b). This trims well with silver or gold depending on the rest of your hardware. Also trims well with white and yellow if you want something a little louder. I've only used the CP version so I can't say what non CP looks like. Glenn

Steve, I've got the C702DHX built as a spinning rod, and that is one sweet stick. I can't help you on the United series since I haven't even touched one yet, but I can highly recommend the DHX series in that model. Glenn

Is it better to apply Cork Seal before or after your handle is glued in place, or does it make any difference? I have done it both ways with good results, and for me, it seems a little easier to apply Cork Seal (and let dry) before epoxying the handle to the blank. Then I got to thinking....does the epoxy need air to fully cure, and would a sealed grip interfere with this process? Or does th

Putter, I agree with Billy on the weight issue. I havent weighed them either, but I cannot tell a noticeable difference between the Soft Touch seat and a regular Fuji seat. So it would be a negligible weight difference, if any. I remember reading earlier that some people were having trouble with Soft Touch seats not making a good tight fit with the reel, but I haven't had that trouble. T

Bob, I have used the Soft Touch casting reel seats for about 3 years now, and I love them. Both Jann's Netcraft and Cabela's sell the casting and spinning models. They have a non-slippery feel to their texture that allows you to maintain a very comfortable grip on your rod, but they aren't soft and mushy as the name might imply. While they are a little pricey compared to the standard or
