With a very hot water bath, then 10 seconds in the microwave the Rod Bond was as good as new. Thanks everyone....mission accomplished!

I have only built a few rods and this web site has been invaluable to a newbie like me, thank you! I have a question about Rod Bond, does it have a shelf life? I have some that I used about 18 months to 2 years ago. Both parts still "look" OK, but when I mixed a test batch the resin seemed extra thick. It also seemed that it took a long time to harden ( I realize when it hardens it is s

Steve thanks for inquiring about the Fly Logic blanks. I'm still a "newbe" to rod building and just picked up a 9ft 6/7 2 piece for a good price. I have been wondering how others on the site feel about this blank too. Thanks for the input everyone, I really appreciate and respect your opinions.

I would like to thank all those who have posted in response to my question about the use of a Foredom motor for rod wrapping. Once again, the experience and insight of the builders on this site is greatly appreciated. As many of you have mentioned, this is a very high rpm motor and after further investigation I feel that there are other motors out there better suited for rod building. Thanks for

I have been building rods for about two years and still consider myself a "newbie" to rod building. Recently I bought an old (but functioning) Foredem wood carving motor at a yard sale. Has any one seen this type of a motor used to power a rod wrapper? Any ideas or plans would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks...Jeff HIll

Emory, the idea of "resonant frequency" in rod blanks intrigues me. As far as the "feel" of a rod goes I tend to like the overall feel of a 2 piece fly rod over a 4 piece rod. An engineer friend (non fisherman) said that it could have something to do with the resonant frequency of the blank. In your opinion, would the number of pieces of a rod blank have an impact on the reson

Kip,
I too am a new guy to rod building. Infact my first posting was "How tight is too tight". Use the "search" function to find this thread. There was a lot of good advise given on this subject.
Good Luck!

Tom, would you suggest a temporary wrap with no finish applied,1.5x the diameter of the ferrule? (I guess the length of wrap isn't a major issue at this point)
Thanks

Emory and Bob, thanks for the helpful feed back. I'll take your advice, place my guides and test cast with confidence in newer technology and a little masking tape just for good measure.
Thanks!

10. Ferrule Wraps
When I first started doing research on building a fly rod, I checked out a book from the library on rod building by Bo Wessman. In the book it suggested that you make the ferrule reinforcement wrap before putting the rod together. (To avoid splitting the graphic fibers). I just recieved Tom Kirkman's book and have read it cover to cover. What a great book! My question is do I need to worry about

11. Re: Grip shape?
I am looking forward to the upcoming article in Rod Maker that Tom has mentioned. It sounds like there is data to back up what my casting hand has been telling me for the past few years ( I thought it might have been old age catching up to me). I have three fly rods that I use on a regular basis. One has a cigar grip. The other two, both 5wt rods, are almost identical with the exception of the gr

I am new to rod building but, I am a woodcarver who has sold many quality carved fish to clients. I would rather give something away to someone who appreciates the quality, efforts and talents it takes to carve the fish than sell it to someone who wants to keep bartering and bickering after a final price has been agreeded upon. If all else fails, put everything in writting up front.

Thanks for all of the advise. Bob you mentioned "Tom's book". Can you give me the title of the book and the author?
Thanks...Jeff Hill

Thanks for the much needed advise. This is a great web source (it is better than a web-site) for rod builders. I'm sure this will not be the last time I post a question, once again...Thanks!

This is my first time building a rod. I have been fly tying for many years and this seems like the next step. For the past few weeks I have been wrapping practice guides and dressings on old fiberglass blanks. A friend told me that my wrappings maybe too tight. How tight is too tight?
Thanks!
