The main consideration for length of a fly rod, is line mending. Being a saltwater rod, mending is most likely not a big consideration :) The other reason for choosing a longer rod would be for float tubing (to keep the line off the water). Again I hope you won't be floating tubing in the Ocean :) Christian

Someone put the wrong cork or shaft in the kit. Have them send you the right piece. No this is not common. Nor are kits where the fighting butt cork and the insert shaft are not preglued. Christian

The last bit of the fighting butt is harder to twist in (to keep it from unscrewing at the wrong moment). There is a usually a rubber ring set in a groove on the shaft that adds the friction. I have installed many of these and have never had one not fit. You should not have to trim the FB. If for some reason it still does not screw in, double check by removing the rubber ring. If it sti

One other very important thing about Payment: If you take a check, make sure your bank will accept foreign checks (smaller banks and credit unions may not). If they do - it will take about 2 weeks to clear. If you are setup to take credit cards, make sure you merchant account company will take foreign cards (they may handle most Euro countries, but most will not take African, Indo, or forme

When you are ready to ship just go to the Post Office and they will have all the paperwork you need. Make sure you tell your client they are responanble for any French fees or tariffs. Christian

Tip sizes listed can not be completely counted on. There will be some small varability between different blanks of the same model. It shouldn't be more than a half size off. If you can get the tip on just a little bit - scraping off the finish will get you the rest of the way there. Christian

Scrape the finish off with the flat (not sharp) edge of a single-edged razor blade. I don't use sandpapger it's too easy to get to the fibers. You would not generally want to use sandpaper to make a water break-free surface anyway. It leave deeper gouges in the surface as opposed to 000. Christian

Your final coat should not be scuffed. Be careful about dust and you will have a great final coat. I wipe on Tru-Oil with a lint free cloth (usually old t-shirt material). No need to rotate the reel seat. if it's dripping you need remove the excess. Christian

Depending on the wood, you won't want to spend the time reaming and 1/8 of an inch. And boring/drilling the insert without a lathe is tricky proposition I bet Les will rebore the insert for you. Christian

Yes, added weight will lower the resonance frequency. This is the softer feel. Also the longer the blank (all things being equal) the greater the e

David - It doesn't mean it's mislabeled. The factory labels a rod a certain line number for a reason. Overlining a rod slows the rod down, usually to compensate for a caster. XP's are made for a quick stroke, and if you can get the timing down it throws an enormous amount of line. Overlining a rod will cut that possible distance down. The better option is to match a rod to a caster's ski

To get the most out of a stiff fast action rod (like the XP) you need a quick stroke and very defined stops. This is very demanding on your muscles and joints. I switched from XP's because of the same reasons you state. I got great distance but I did not last long on the water. Icy Hot was waiting for me at the end of the day. I use lighter more efficient rods like the Gatti FRHP or D2. Sag

As Tom has explained many times - they aren't getting it. Fundamentally CCS is a measurement - The ERN is application for fly rods. The Power and Action Angle are empirical - They are what they are. it is impossible for them to be a "pile of" anything. Anyone can that that same rod and get the same result (if they do it correctly). The ERN is an application of those measuremen

I agree with Mike - They are worthless. I tried 2 batches as tests (just let them harden). The mix was off on both. I don't remember if they never hardened or just took forever, it was 2-3 years ago. I do remember throwing them away.

Couple of hints for boiling - Get the water to a fast boil before you start. If the reel seat has a wood insert (which is a great heat insulator) you need to heat it from the inside out - take off the end cap (alcohol torch or better propane torch will work), Then wrap the seat in a heavy freezer bag. Take a pencil (the eraser end and push the bag up the butt end of the blank. This will hel

The kit is very easy to use. The instructions are more than adequate. Use good quality, short shank spade bits. If you just want to bore the arbors, use JB-Weld epoxy. I found that it held out better than RodBond, when the bit runs hot. If you also want to bore cork, use JB Weld and pin the pilot to the spade bit. Christian

Don't use masking tape. Auto stores will sell pin stripe tape or use vinyl tape.

I don't use my bearing based spine finder anymore. I have a vice with some rubber jaws I clamp the butt of the section in the vice and flick the other end. I rotate and flick the section until I get a mostly up/down motion. I've found this to be the most accurate when working on short stiff sections. Christian

I have also used bearings from my local hardware store, and they don't move as well as more expensive bearings. But for spine finding they works just fine. You don't need exceptionally smooth movement they just need to roll, it's a fairly gross measurement. You can generally find a local bearing supply company in you phone book. The company I go to has very nice sales people, considering I bu

Permagloss is not available in a spray can. Get some regular old coffee filters. Pour a small amount on a filter and make one complete pass on the rod. If dries in less than a hour and then re-coat if needed. Christian

One of the first things my freinds taught me when I started fishing was - If you snag, point the rod at the snag and pull the line. Why do people not know this, I've always thought of this as basic information. Or were my early fishing experiences an anomoly. Christian

Randy - Store fixtures for retail product are generally only available from the company and they are likely more expensive than you think (low volume), if they will even sell it to non-retailer. Your best option is to call Gudebrod. Christian

Also Double Edged razor blades. They are sharper than the single edged ones and they snap into shapes that can get into tight places. Now my single edged razors are dedicated to scraping cured epoxy. Christian

The Gudebrod Spatula - They call it the Metal Chemical Mixer. I use it to mix epoxy, to burnish, packing thread, and about 100 other things. It's also easy to clean.
