1. Rod Tips
Does anyone know who stocks or has access to the larger tip-tops?
25-28-32/64ths for old, large o.d. rods.
Thanks.

So, bottom line is that this type of fishing is pretty close to my old 12' cane pole with the line tied to the end,
just breaks down into small sections?
Thing has been hanging on the wall for 40 years now.
Might just have to get it down for a while just to play around with some bluegills.
But then, would likely end the day with misty-eyes and an aching heart for things and places that are

Almost all of my work is in rebuilding. Most of the rods are father/son hand-down rods, that general idea.
And most of them are restorations back to original model, or as close as possible with the potential differences in what is available in today's material as opposed to what was used way back when.
Yes, the labor involvement is much more than in simply putting together a nice, clean, un

I use the 14" Jet for grips and reel seats.
Does anybody have any experience, information, or recommendations about the lathe duplicator devices?
Thank you.

I have been using a lot of the cork tape lately, and I do the same as Jon, with some Zap or Duco.
Also have taken to making about a 1/2" wrap with the xt braid at the squared-off ends.
Everyone has liked this so far.

8. Bamboo grips
Does anybody have any experience working bamboo stalks on the lathe? Am thinking about trying to turn some grips out of bamboo (1 1/2-2" diameter stalks). Possibly some reel seats.
Gouges and parting tools just chop up the material and break off real bad splinters.
Sandpaper, sanding block, mesh, maybe even the electric contour sander while the stalk is turning?
Maybe even something el

Function and utilization are the only major considerations. "Pretty" is secondary. Nothing at all wrong with building a rod that can combine good looks with superior "fishability", but
a rod that has been constructed for accuracy and comfort, with the right size and height guides for the reel and line used, is in the long run, going to be use more than one that is primar

Just asking about Mike Bolt. All okay and everything, right?
Just have not noticed anything by or about him for a little while now, hoping sincerely all is right. Always could be that I have just missed a post here or there. Thanks, Gary

Thanks, guys, for the ideas. Guess I should have mentioned this is for round material, so really need a 3-jaw. don't I? Also need to be 1x8

Have been using the C3J-4 from Penn State, am happy with it.
But have a need now for another of the same 3-jaw self-center chuck type, but able to handle material around 2-21/4" diameter.
Penn State may have it, but if they do, guess I just missed seeing it.
Would appreciate any leads on what would be a good one for my Jet.
Just on a side note, anyone interested in

Bill, this whole thing with you two reminds me of some of my home-brew "time consumption" projects..
Like the claw hammer with the head turned upside-down, has a mini flashlight mounted to the hammer neck to see what you are aiming at. Head mounted to a spring hinge with a battery controlled off/on switch. Small mirror on one side in order to study your hammer stroke

Apologies for the off-topic thread, but I am more likely to receive the response I need from this forun than most others.
Would someone please allow me a little feedback on their impressions of and experiences using the
Ross "Cimmaron" model fly reel? If possible, specifically the reel for 9/10 wt line?
Would appreciate any help I can get. Have almost been t

So, then, my understanding is that a guy who has fished the older model, slower fiberglass rods in the heavier line weights could probably be comfortable or "feel okay" with the Hexagraph.
Is this correct?
I know where they are at here in Houston, and I have been somewhat curious about them. Gary

Jim, I have had pretty good luck just using a deck of cheap playing cards. Mixing on the card, little brush work here and there, and on open areas, just wipe on with the card. Gary

Seriously though, this 14" mini-lathe seems to be a pretty good piece of work. Quiet, solid, no vibration to speak of, dead accurate right out of the bo

A thread further down the page only left me with more questions.
When making a wood reel seat/insert or for a grip, how dry is dry enough? How do you really tell for sure? Especially way down into the middle of the wood? What kind of time period is needed? Do you buy or cut a piece of wood, then need to leave it be for several months, etc.? Can you use the microwave a little to help

This may have been mentioned before and I just did not see the post. It seems that I have noticed a few photos recently about which any benefit to a rodbuilding forum just sort of goes right over my head. I realize "to each his own", but some of the pictures from the last few days just do not seem appropriate to this site.
Well, like usual, offer a penny for my thoughts and I

Another good example of why I pay everything with money orders. Always a chance of never receiving the paid-for merchandise, same as any other long-distance transaction. But no personal records of any kind are given out for misuse.
I have yet to run into any discrepancies using this method.
The only problem is the time factor involved in using the mail service, but have to consi
