Hello all,
I was wondering about Dan Crafts service, esp. of late.
Can anyone provide any feedback?
thanks

but I want to cast a 3 weight. Isn't that going to make it difficult for short distances, if I buy a 4 weight ?
thanks

anybody use this rod ??
I'm wondering how it performs in short distance nymphing (sight fishing with little weight, and up close, tiny or no indicator).
thanks !
I will be calling him on monday .
cheers,
m

yeh, actually I am not going for sheer performance. I am thinking of basically making a specialty nymphing rod for winter fishing.
The water here is low and slow, and even an 18" fish can often be landed less than 1/2 minute. I want to lower the number of times I have to clean the ice off the guides (more fishing, and it will save my finger from freezing).

so I was considering building a #3, and oversizing the guides.
not so that I could cast further, but hoping that it would help reduce the number of times that I had to clean my guides from ice during the winter.
I was thinking that while I'm still going to get ice in the guides, hopefully I won't have to clean them as often.
Is this a stupid idea ?
I'm not overly concerned about weigh

is there a good beginner book for building fly rods that you'd recommend.
I'd like something that was good at explaining the basics. I'm not going to get fancy or anything. I just want to select some good components, and finish a good looking rod.
I am also going to have help from an experienced rod maker, but I would like to "study" while we go forward, so that I'm not trying to

thanks Mark,
yeh, I wasn't going to ask every question on making it. I'm gonna go to my local library tomorrow and see what they have. My local library has an amazing fly fishing collection.
the handle was the only thing that "scared" me, so that's why I asked.
cheers,
mark

everybody has good things to say about Dan Craft blanks, but I'm confused.
Are they talking about the Five River blanks ?
When you click on blanks from Dan Craft enterprises nothing shows up ?
thanks

I am trying to find a blank for a 4 piece, #3 9' fly rod.
I have only found blanks from Dan Craft, Elkhorn, and Sage (Z-axis).
does anyone else know of any other blanks out there for this?
thanks

I'm thinking of building a fly rod.
I will probably buy a Dan Craft blank (9', #3, 4 piece).
I'm aware of some rod building issues, but don't know much about putting on, making the cork handle.
What all is involved, and is it difficult ? Can I just buy a cork handle for this rod and put the thing on ? Right now I want to focus on wraps, and some of the other basics.
any good links on
