I'm getting back into rod building after many years. Lots of new stuff to learn on the intarwebs. I am building a casting rod for steelhead fishing. I plan to do a spiral wrap on this rod. I am generally familiar with the spiral wrap concept. I have read reference to the "simple spiral" and the "O'Quinn spiral", among others. I did not find any description of the

I am building a steelhead casting rod on a Cascade Composites 10'6" blank. I am spiral wrapping the guides (first time) - I can make the transition from the reel to the underside of the rod with just two double foot guides. The third double foot guide is on the large end of the tip section. I may have to adjust the position of the third guide slightly so that the wraps are proportional.

I am using black Alconite guides on this rod, so I'll do some test wraps with jet black thread. What manufacturer? Gudebrod? another company? regular or NCP? Thanks.

My personal preference is for no frills rods with minimal trim work - I want a high performance fishing tool. I am building a steelhead rod on a Cascade Composites clear finish blank - blank is a dark gray color. I am planning to use Flex Coat color preserver and lite finish. I want to wrap the guides with a thread that will be a close match to the blank color when finished. I will do some

I remember seeing this technique used by Dale Clemens in his first book, "Fiberglass Rod Making". Should work ok - but reel seat arbors might make a more sensitive rod. I'm sure some of the more experienced rod builders on this site can provide more information.

Bruce Vetre - Thank you. I will measure the rod blank over the weekend and send you the dimensions by e-mail. I will gladly compensate you for the rod sections and postage and your time and effort. Thanks again. Steve Pierson

I have an old Lamiglas graphite 5'4" bass blank - designed to be inserted into a pistol grip handle. I want to extend it to about 6' before building a spinning rod on the blank. Where can I get some oversize blank sections to make a sleeve to go over the butt end of the blank? Thanks.

I have always received great service from Angler's Workshop, as well. More than I can say for some other suppliers.

I have a Pacific Bay exposed blank casting reel seat reamed and ready for mounting. I am pleased with the fit. Hand reamed the hole with a tapered reamer covered with abrasive grit. Had to finish reaming at an angle to get the reel seat body parallel with the rod blank. Seems like the interior hole was not parallel with the body as manufactured. Have you ever seen this situation with these ree

So how do you users of other lathes (like the Delta or PSI) spin your rod blanks for shaping cork or foam handles? Drill bits and tape stuffed inside the end of the blank? Do the other lathes come with rod supports? Or do you build your own? Just trying to research all the options before I make a lathe purchase. Thanks for your input.

I am considering purchasing a Flex Coat cork lathe. Questions for those of you that use this device - How do you drive the rod blank? How do you attach the rod blank to the drill? Is is sturdy enough for heavy sanding on cork grips? What about shaping foam grips? Are you happy with the lathe? Would you buy another one? I could build the drill stand myself. Are roller supports

Thanks, gentlemen. I am comfortable with the 14" handles on my 8' to 9' rods - seems to be the right length for me. I will stick with that for this next rod.

I am getting ready to build a 11'3" casting rod for steelhead. I ordered a 14'" cork handle - typical for an 8 to 9 foot rod. Do you think a longer handle is needed for good balance on a long rod like this? Possibly around 16"? Thanks for your advise.

Andrew - I tried adding the website address to the allowed list in Internet Explorer. Didn't make any difference. Also have Norton and Spyware Doctor on the computer - I think that one of those programs is blocking the popups. I'll let you know if I figure this out.

I am planning a steelhead casting rod. I am considering using an exposed blank reel seat. Do you find them useful in feeling the bite? Worth the extra work to fit them? Thanks for your input.

Thanks, everyone for your advice. I am researching spiral wraps right now. I have seen rods wrapped in this manner - but have not built one myself.

I bought a Cascade Composites blank from MudHole - 11'3" - model #ISA1355F. I will build this as a baitcasting rod. I will fish braided line. I will use this rod primarily for tossing spoons. I have built rods in the past - but the last one was about ten years ago. What ring size tip would you use on this rod? I plan to start with a ring size 16 guide. Then a 12 (or two). Then a
