It's hard to see, but I put a single metallic silver band just before the wrap starts on either side.

Tried to keep this rod light and simple, still a lot to learn!

I was really happy with the way this rod came out, it's my 4th and although the chevrons dont exactly line up, it's better than I expected.

Thanks guys, I like the way they look, and with the titanium I could use them for freshwater and saltwater in the bays/lagoons/surf without worrying about corrosion. Maybe I'll save my pennys and try them on my next rod.

I came across these one day and like the way they look, but would be using them on a MH fast action bass rod which would see a little saltwater action. I'm going to load the reel up with 30# braid and thought these would be a nice fit. Has anyone used them? If so, what do you think?

Thanks for the help.
I'll try what you said about taping the guides on to see how it works, and offseting the first guide sounds like a good idea since my jigmaster doesn't have a levelwind. Should be a fun project, I'l post up some pics when I'm done with it.

I have a heavy Shimano spinning rod that I got at Sports Authority for $20 a while ago. I wanted to cut off the guides and make it a casting rod to pair up with a Jigmaster that I've added magnets to for braking. I realized that since it's a 2 piece rod, maybe I could just make it a spiral wrap and only have to cut and re-wrap one guide?
So my question is, with spiral wraps, is the guide plac

Did a couple rods this week, then both came out pretty good IMO. A couple minor flaws here an there, but overall I'm happy with them.
I put together this swimbait rod for a friend:

I have some Devcon 2Ton epoxy. I just looked at the label and it says it will bond metal. I bought it to seal lures with, but I never would have thought to use it on a rod!

Someone on this site told me about Bob at customtackle.com another sponsor of this site... if you call and talk to him he will help you size out the parts. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of finding the right sizes for reel seats etc. He's a great guy, and his customer service is 2nd to none.
Congrats on your new hobby!

I'm getting ready to build a 5 wt fly rod for my brother in law. I've never wrapped a fly rod, and I'm holding the reel seat in my hand and looking at the butt cap??? It's metal on metal, and it feels like there's a little bit of play when I put them together. I'm sure it's sized properly, but I'm wondering if I need to tape it a little? Should I use the U40 to glue this butt cap onto the reel se

Thanks guys! I took a little bit from each of you, and called Bob at custom tackle... he's a huge help as well.
Here's what I ended up with... the matte finish (gray) blank, burl rosewood reel seat with cork grips. Chrome winding check, chrome folding hook keeper, chrome single foot guides, and garnet wraps with silver trims using size A thread. I'll put a small butt wrap on it with my bro i

I'm going to order parts (today hopefully) for a fly rod for my brother-in-law to give him for his birthday. I'm planning on ordering a Rainshadow 9' 5wt blank, but after that I'm confused. I know most of you guys do fly rods, but this will be my first so I could use a little guidance for matching colors etc.
I was thinking of putting on a burl rosewood reelseat, but then what colors to wrap

Thanks guys! I just called and talked with bob and he took my whole order... got everything I wanted from him. I told him I was relatively new to this and he got me on the right track with a better sized grip for the rod I'm building.
He's definitely got my business from here on out.

Hey everyone,
I'm finally getting ready to order parts for a new rod. It's going to be a Rainshadow 7' mag bass rod, here's the specs:
261244 IMB843 7' F MH 10-17 1/4-3/4 0.600 5.5 H
And the reel seat I want will have a cutout. However, I'm not sure which size. I'm looking at the ECSM Graphite Blank-Exposed Reel Seat (Size 17) and if I get a size 15 (ID) it

That actually occurred to me after I was looking at it after it dried. I'm going to cut it off and try again... fortunately I have this old rod to tear apart and play with.
Thanks eve

I move them 90 to one side, and up about 6" from the upper grip because I find that when I have to walk any distance on the beach or lakes, that I like to carry the rod there since it balances at that point.
A quick note, on one 9'6" spinning rod I made, I accidentally put it on the top of the rod and sometimes when I have slack in the line after casting, the hook keep will grab the

So I'm prepping to buy some components for a new rod and was coming here to look for advice on guides... then I got sidetracked because I came across a thread about tiger wraps. So what did I do? I did what most of you would have done too... forgot completely about researching my guides and went into the garage to try to learn a tiger wrap.
So I laid down a layer of Emerald Blue in size C, pu

I'd be interested in one of these too. I've been using white waterslide paper and an inkjet... the only problem with that is it's hard to cut around the decal itself and make it look nice. So I just print a black background (for black blanks) and wrap it around.
Other than the ability to print metallics, how much better is this system than what I'm doing?

I'm with you, this site is awesome. I'm wrapping my 5th rod right now and already have plans for the next one. It's completely addicting, but it's nice to know there are others out there that are just as passionate about it!

Is there any special trick to building a split grip rod? I want to make a 10' for catfishing and fishing sharks from the shore. I'm thinking the split grip would be appropriate since I'll need a longer butt for casting.
Looks pretty straight forward to me, but I thought I should ask before diving into it.
Thanks!

Check out the specs on Seeker blanks at mudhole. A lot of my friends that fish offshore in CA like them, and I just wrapped a 6' one piece casting rod with one. It feels a little heavy, but it's definitely got backbone.

Thanks! I'm going to try them out. I was worried if the flexibility was just a gimmick.
Ked, the ones I'm looking at are on Mudhole and are made by REC... I'll check out the jannsnetcraft ones too.
Spencer, good call on the tip.
