People in England catch carp on “float rods” with “center pin reels.” The rods are strong enough for large carp and about 10-15 feet long. What does this equate to in the United States? I had a professional builder make a spinning rod for me. It was a 7'6" medium light, graphite rod with a slow tip. The rod was kinda flimsy and bent like a parabola. In order to get a good hook set I had to set extra hard. I set the hook on a 2 lb bass and the rod broke into three pieces; tip, butt and mid section. I was using 12lb test mono with the drag set below the breaking strength.

Do you remember those old Mitchell Garcia spinning reels from the 50's and 60's? They were solid, simple and lasted forever.

The greatest trophy bass angler “Bill Murphy" built a rod designed for stitching. The idea is to throw plastic worms with very light split shots on light line. The technique is to let the worm settle and then use your free hand to slowly inch the worm or live crawdad back to the boat.
