Nib pressure and perfect practice on different rod blanks. Try a few letters at a time. Have a hand rest near the blank to keep your hand in position. When complete, cover inscription with a coat of acrylic spray, found at art stores. This is compable with finish, so no smearing will occur.

You will need color preserver to mount your feather inlays as well as solidifying your thread colors. Plenty of feathers last year at the expo/ show at the Vintage Tackle booth. Ask for Ken. He has written instructions for mounting the feathers and what kind of CP is best for use.

If you like the actions of the fast sage, loomis, or scott, you will like the rx8. My ccs data indicates the 4 pc rx8 blanks will cast more comfortably with one to one and one half line sizes higher at the std of 30 feet out of the tip. Regards

Mike. Pac bay offers their wrappers either left of right handed. I prefer to wrap with the butt right so I have a pacbay right handed wrappper which also means that I can have the butt right and wrap from the front. You can rewire the motor to turn opposite but now the thread carriage is in the back so you wrap from the back and top.

If you are referring to the XF662-4 6'-6" 4 pc rated by batson for a 2 wt line - go ahead and build it. I have built a number of these - one for myself and a few others for fishing our local spring creek and it is will be one of your favorite dry fly and multi fly nymph you'll own. Regards, CP

Unhide your email and let me know what rating you want to achieve and I will provide some suggestions of fly blanks that make the appropriate spin rod.

Hands down Batson switch rod 10'-8" switch for 8 wt will cover your salmon fishing - plenty of butt and just right for spey style casting on the Salmon. I've built a dozen for fishers who go there. If you prefer to use it for steelies too - build the 7 wt.

Yes you can use 5 min epoxy in fact sinceit sets up quickly it is easy to use. To remove Devcon 5 min epoxy - it will crystallize when heated and cooled twice. Just heat for a less than a min at less than 350 degrees with your heat gun, then cool for 5 min then heat again. As you heat the second time the tip top wil come right off. You'll see the crystallized result.

You can experiment with every step but each experiment has consequences. CP dries overnight so put it on late in the evening and you won't get any surprises when you apply finish the next day. Rod bond can be mixed so that it seems more flexible by not using one-to-one ratio by additional resin. More tinkering. Mix it correctly and forget about it. It'll do what its supposed to do on its own

I bought a few pieces of wood at the big show and their addition added greatly to the value of the custom rod I built and eventually sold.

The only guide that sees any stress when test casting is the tip top which you probably have secured with tip top adhesive. Tape or elastic guide bands are suffiecient to test cast.

After all these years of building I still can't figure out where to put the butt or stripping guide on a surf rod. I've put some at 27",some at 30 ",some at some measurement based on the casters arm length and anywhere inbetween. Any body have a starting point and rational for that spot?

I would add that some economy of materials and cost can be achieved when you have a numberof rods to build. An epoxy and finish mix can accomodate an extra rod or two without wasting excess. When you are on a roll, continuing to wrap is very productive. But all the custom touches need focused attention and TLC to make that custom rod an heirloom.

A very inexpensive alternative is a ring of tape as a guide and a triangle file. Turn the blank as you go. Very safe since no power tool is needed. Takes about 30 second to achieve a cut through most thin walled blanks.

Put the bottle near a lamp with a 100 watt bulb for 20-30 min. Crystals and foggyness will disappear.

George, try a little "formula" I use. Measure the distance from the point of your elbow to the tip of your longest finger when your arm is placed in front of your body forming an L shape. Add 10 inches to this measurement. Your total, in inches, is the distance from the center of the reel seat to your stripper.

Although the unpainted area may look unfinished it allows for some creativity. I add a nice feather inlay on it and it distracts from the color change and frames out the feather work. That family of rods are also very fishable and until you cast one you might be surprised by its value.

Standard for weight of fly line is 30 feet plus the level tip section - generally another 1-2 feet. You can see where the front taper meets the head that starts the first 30 feet.

Dave, Take a few pix of the rod with a reel on it and some fishy/components in the background. Surround the rod displayed with the pix. Highlight the features of the rod in the pix so peaople will then look at the rod to find those features. Regards
