I recently crafted my first rod. It was a real beginners project but many lessons were learned. I started with a simple rod kit from one of the vendors, and it went pretty well over all. The down fall of such an excercise was that I have not really learned much about the different choices available to me regaurding things like guides, grips (eva or hypolon?). Is there a place that would have

Thanks for the advice. I guess I can get it done then. I have made a marathon out of my first rod (quitting smoking and guide spacing were a major train wreck for me). But its fishing season and my buddies got me a new reel just for me custom rod. Its nothing special for sure but I built and there will be a lot of satisfaction out of slaying maying rock fish with it.

So, after I expoxy the guides I will then coat the entire rod in the finish? Does this include the already epoxied guides?

Ok, I have a question and I can't seem to find the answer anyhere. Is the epoxy I use on my wrapped guides different from the finish? I am assuming so. The finish is for the whole rod (?) and the epoxy is only for the guides(?). My rod is nearly done and I can't seem to the information I need about this last subject. Any help here would be appreciated.

I have that book, It is great. I was quite happy to see that Tom Kirkman is the moderator of this site (I assume they are one and the same). I was figuring the DVD would have a few good things to be able to see being done. Thanks for the tip though.

Here is another question then, John Dow above said to dry it on what ever i use to wrap it. I have a fairly nice wooden wrap set up, but will the epoxy get on the felt that lines the V's?

8. DVD?
Just a quick question really. In travels around the web I keep running across this DVD by Ken Preston. Would this be a helpful item to a beginning rod builder?

Wow, that was a fast response. I have been pouring over this website to the point where my eyes are like raisins and I have to read the same thing about 4 times to figure out what it says. I am pretty excited to put my first rod together (hope no one takes offense to this, but curse the holidays for getting in the way of my liesure activities) and its nice to find a good community of what seem

Well, I am about to build my first rod. I don't have a lot in the way of tools and I am sure those will be comeing in the future. My biggest concern is getting the epoxy to dry evenly. I will not have the luxery of a motorized drier so I am wondering how difficult it will be get the epoxy to dry evenly. Any idea's out there? I start working on it right after Christmas. Thanks in advance for a
