Some time ago I responded to a message concerning the risk of bird flu from feathers. At the time I said there was little risk. Since then, we have more information and the U.S. government has determined that there is a risk to handling feather products from countries experiencing outbreaks of H5N1 influenza. There is currently a ban on the importation of birds and bird products from H5N1-affec

I tried them. Didn't have a problem with the mix but did get bubbles and they crapped out after the 3rd usage.

It is in a red/white/blue bottle. WalMart has it. You'll find it in with the bluing/cleaning supplies of just about any sporting goods section.

You rang?? I am both an epidemiologist and a virologist. I would preface the following by stating that it re[resents my opinion and not necessarily that of my employer.

I plan on starting a fly rod soon and would like to use gold hardware (e.g. reel seat). I checked many of the suppliers at left and could not find anyone who had gold colored seats. Plenty of nickel silver and a lot of black but no gold. Is there some sort of curse/taboo about gold seats known only to fly rod builders or did I just do a lousy search job and miss something.

I've made a relatively limited number (6) of grips for both spinning and casting rods out of rosewood, cocobolo and blackwood. All are fairly heavy woods. I'm building one now for a coworker - cocobolo with blackwood

I use denatured alcohol as both a solvent and in alcohol lamps. Methanol will work just as well - whichever is cheapest. Denatured alcohol is simply grain alcohol (ethanol) with additives (often methanol) that make it poisonous. I get mine in gallon cans at the local ACE hardware.

The one very real and serious disadvantage I have with wood handles is that the variety in material and form is endless and I will never be able to exhaust the possibilities. You can mix it with cork and use it for accents to make a more traditional handle or you can make one entirely from wood - solid or cork cored. I combine wood with fiber spacers used for knife handles to make trim rings. T
