Kerry is right. Casting a sink tip is nothing like your standard floating line cast. I use a 350 grain sink tip with my St.Croix Ultra 4f968 8 wt and shoot it all the way across the Skagit River, after learning how to do so. Just strip out a bunch of line and with only some 20 or 30 feet of line off the tip, drag it back behind you, then launch it forward and release the line. I can shoot almost

I don't see a problem. If you are after certified record fish under IGFA rules, apply the rules. You got no beatch. If you don't care about setting an IFGA record, do what ever you want. If I caught a record steelhead on a non standard rod, so what, I don't need no certification, I caught a lunker, and just landing that sucker on a rod I built myself is more than good enought for me. Heii, I'm ha

I use a gear motor designed to drive the pump in a furnace. Continuous duty in high heat environment. Will not fail for many many years. It cost $35, and I had to get a $6 condenser to go with it. I salvaged a toggle switch from an old plotter, then used the wiring diagram that came with it to wire it all up. Perfecto with no worries about failure in the very light duty needed by a rod dryer. I w

Relax, Bruce. Any idea will attract some naysayers. Any GOOD idea will guarantee a multitude. Such is the internet. I've got a bottle of PG just sitting in the refer and an old VW that is going to get your treatment, as the turn signal lenses are no longer available at any price. Thanks for the info. Super value to me.

For 1 1/4" rings (8-2) x (10-3) = 54 rings from 8"x10" sheet. For 20"x20" (20-5) x (20-5) = 225 rings

Consider using a heavier reel. Adding weight to the butt will also work. Yes, better balance will reduce strain.

Do yourself a favor and contact Siskiyou Aviary, listed to the left. They sent me a bunch of types of feathers for inlays with a list of prices. I sent back the ones I didn't want and sent payment for the ones I kept. Great assortment, all high grade quality. Cannot be beat. Otherwise, flytying feathers of many types can be used for inlays. Also, keep your eyes peeled when walking around the

I did one with Ebony stain. Used Trondak Cork-Seal on top. No issues yet after some 30 days/8 months on the water. Very very easy to redu if it ever rubs through.

Michael, absolutely you were correct to use this forum for it's intended purpose. Sharing experience and seeking the answers to better results. The proof of your correctness is the many opinions and comments offered. I cannot speak to your specific issue with Madeira thread because I haven't used it yet. I have a bunch of it and hope to use it in future. Your thread was certainly right for me bec

I encourage experimentation. Indeed, knowledge comes therefrom. But the error is accepting testimony as in someway equal to applied science. All I was saying is make note of the difference. Understand the risk involved. Reduce the risk of wasted time on final products by doing tests and experiments on the side with disposable time/money, and fully develop any new technique before you try to sell

Follow up on the thread below with regard to internet forum info. What must be done is to distinguish between given procedures by the manufacturers and the testimony of users. Lots and lots of @#$%& is sold via testimony only. If you want to follow testimony, then it is reasonable and prudent to do your own testing to see if the technique will work for you before you make a mess of a commitment t

I use the St. Croix 4f968 for both salmon/steelhead and bass. Throws big bugs and poppers very very well. Very easy to cast a long ways with great accuracy. I am nothing like an expert fly caster, but this rod makes me look like one. It will even cast well a 450 grain sink tip. That's like a 12 weight line. Amazing power, and firm enough for quick hook sets on hit and run fish like bass and trout

Yes, you must measure the blank, then order a half mm smaller seat and finish sand or ream the ID to perfect fit.

How about telling us about the rod you built!!!! First liar ain't got a chance. I have two hair wing flys on my Filson. Those two flys caught over a hundred trout in a 3 day weekend some 4 years ago. Hand made 4wt on a St. Croix blank.

One off= custom. In other words, unique in design or just simply, one item from start to finish. Specifcally excludes two or more at once thereby saving some time in the process. Prototype is one example but a prototype is not designed for sale, but for testing of the design.

In the last 5 years or so I have seen the big all-in-one type stores carrying less and less semi-good goods and moving toward nothing but junk on the fishing rod and reel shelves. 10 years ago or so I was buiding my own fly rods, but wanted a light spinning rod and didn't want to wait for parts and such. So I went through all the Wally World offerings at the time. Amonst all the junk at that time

I have the Crown 3 pc pen turning set. A parting chisel, a skew and a 3/8" gouge. That's all I have need of to do handles, reel seats, winding checks and butt caps with plastics, wood and cork.

Rule of thumb for a basic rod, labor charge is $75 to $150. I expect 3 to 4 hours at the bench for a one off project. If I did 3 similar/same rods as a batch, time savings per each will be 30%+. 6 rods in a batch, save 50% in time per each over a one off custom. That does not reduce the value of the product. That value is mine as a higher profit margin. I designed and built my rod lathe specif

Similar to the Cortlant setup mentioned above, both Martin and Scientific Angler's have complete setups designed to be low cost and include rod/reel line leader. See them all at Wally World, or most outdoor stores. At your local fishing shops I would expect they might be happy to give you a good price on a 12 lot purchase. Likewise, you could arrange the fly tying goods and books in a bigger pack
