I am looking for a high end graphite 5wt blank for a guy that has the slowest casting stroke I have ever seen. I've used the CTX Affinity MX a couple times on builds and its too fast for this guy. For a 4wt rod, I never go bigger than a sz 12 stripping guide. I personally use a size 10 most often. I have experimented a lot with different ceramic guides on my 4wts over the past few years. For Fuji Alconites, I would never use anything smaller than a size 6 blag. I have tried size 5's before and the line does not flow as smoothly as with a size 6 guide and top. I have actually st

Thanks for putting that clarification out there Jason, that makes them even better value. The 3 and 4wt blanks are really popular out here in the west for normal trout fishing. Now if you would just put out some 9'6" 3-4-5 wt SCV blanks we'd be in heaven.

Jim, I would love to have that in writing from the guys at St Croix, because last time I talked to them they told me the SCIV-SCII blend fly blanks (Imperial) were rolled in their Mexico facility. I would rather buy those than something from China, but still I prefer to build on US made blanks. If they are really rolled in Park Falls, they should make that public knowledge because the sale

Phil, you are talking about the US made SCIV Legend Ultra blanks, which sadly St Croix no longer offers as blanks. They've replaced them with a blend of SCIV-SCII material rolled in Mexico which is what Lane is asking about if I read his post correctly. Has anyone had a chance to use the new black recoil guides from REC? I am having issues with the "Double Black Chrome" wire guides plating wearing thru extremely fast ( 4 months ) on fly rods getting daily use. I like the look of the SF black wire guides so the H&H DLC and Recoils are my next options, and increase in cost basis as well. I know the DLC coating wears off the

Well I need to correct the previous statement, I read that the ABS skeletons were 7 grams, not .7 ounces. Big difference. And it makes them about 1/10th ounce lighter than the Fuji SKM16 if the weight was accurate. If anyone can confirm the weight of the REC ABS skeleton with and without the plug I'd appreciate it. Thanks Tom, maybe someone else can chime in with the other seat weights. I think .35oz is going to be tough to beat for a threaded seat! I think I've read somewhere that the ABS weighs .7oz so the AUS will weigh more due to increased diameter.

I've been using the Fuji SKM16 for fly seats for a few years now. Its common knowledge that they are lighter than any threaded metal skeleton fly seats........ but are they? Does anyone have means to weigh a SKM16 set and the REC ABS or AUS hardware to get scientific about it?

I have a new Gallatin Green 2008 St Croix SCV Legend Elite 9' 4wt blank I am building on. It is the slimmest, lightest fast taper 9' 4wt blank I have ever touched. The "Current" 2008 SCV fly blanks are glossy Gallatin Green, and have been shipping for several months. I have in hand a 9' 4wt 4pc blank that is finished very nicely and was assured by St Croix that the finish on these 2008 Gallatin Green SCV blanks was not going to be a problem like the previous brown blanks.

I asked St Croix about this, I was looking into the new 9' 4wt SCV specs (.315" butt with 3.5 tip) ..... nice and skinny 9' 4wt! .... asked specifically about the previous finish issues. Yep Steve, that is pretty much what we are looking for right now. The Batson guys went and "updated" their blank specs last year, and in the process upped the tip specs a size to 4.5 when 4.0 will work 99% of time..........and they changed the weight specs too and now they show the 9' 4wt weighs more than the 9' 6wt blanks and I just cannot see how that can possibly be. Anyone have direct experience with the RX8+ and SCV in the 4wt blanks, either 8'6" or 9'0"? The specs are very similar but no CCS for any of them. Anglers Workshop 2006 catalog, pg 98, I think item # HSLSC, HSLSB, HSLSG,HSLST are the stand-off SF guide models but I would ask them for confirmation.. They use the term "low guides" instead of stand-off if I remember right. The catalog pic shows the stand-off guides with different Item #'s which was confusing. They are not on the Anglers Workshop website that I know of. H&H

What size reels are you using? Is it that the threaded barrel just won't un-screw far enough? If so is there a chance epoxy found its way out the back under the barrel without being able to see it? Doug, I have recently bult a 7'6" 3wt with sz 1/0 SF Batson guides and it works very well so sz 2 are plenty big. You might consider going with sz 1 to save weight . I went #10 SF ceramic stripper - 4 inches to a #8 SF ceramic tamer - SF wire #1 - 1 - 1/0 - 1/0 - 1/0 - 1/0 - 1/0 - 1/0 - tip top. Right Tom, but I thought ERN=ELN is considered a balanced text book fly rod. If 30' of 4wt is 4.5 ELN, then a true 4wt rod would ERN between 4.0 and 5.0 and for my taste it would be on the 4.0 side. Its where you have a 4wt with an ERN of 6.5 to 7.5 that to me tells me something is not right in the equation. But I get your point about keeping things constant too. I may though do a st

I think I would like to raise the possibility that for an extremely fast taper blank, the CCS uses a flawed assumption that 1/3 of the blank needs to be fully loaded to cast the designated line. Perhaps we should take the Fast taper blanks which have proven to load and cast properly with the 30' of rated line and work backwards to get the proper deflection for the eq
