Thought I could have found my favorite rod, actually was favorite for a very short time. Felt the bite, reeled down straight to fish, went to set the hook and watched the upper third slide off into the water. Its a two peice rod so I will have to buy another blank and fit the upper section to the handle section that is not broken. I could have wrapped the guide to tight. I realy took some time wi

2pc 6'8" MXF, Plasti-Dip over foam split grip handle. 3.56 oz. I wanted to test the 8 lb. foam with Plasti-Dip to see if it will hold up. It seems to be pretty stable.

A couple foam core split grips. I still have a lot to learn about the carbon fiber, but I think I will like it when I get more accustomed to using it.

Hi, There was a thread on the forum about split grip functionality awhile back. I posted that I would post a photo of my favorite sizes and shapes. It took me awhile to post. Bottom handle (light spinning)second from bottom (light casting) Handles with Stance Grace,s Juniper and Mark Blabaum,s inlays great all around casting size handle. Large top handle works great for one or two handed casting

Hi a little bit of a detailed photo. Basically cut a nice pen cap to your desired length, put a hole in the top for line and one a little bit up from the base, cut a slit from base to hole above base. Slide cap on line and rig your bait Texas rig and push it into cap until hook shank is captured in hole at the base. Have fun and see all the things your plastics are capable of now. Have a great da

I have to also say more two piece blanks, extra fast action wood be great, seven ft. and under. I have been experimenting ( Modifying ) with the Rainshadow IM7 two piece popping blanks this summer to come up with a easier to transport Bass fishing rod. Great results with the last IP904f I built. I think with the use of the micro guides that you can build a two piece rod that is just as balanced a

Hi Bill, I think I may have just built a rod that could have something to do with this thread. The rod is a IP903f , 7'6" casting rod. I wanted try out out the 3mm Batson micro guides on a conventionally wrapped casting rod and also hopefully be able to rotate the tip section and use it as a simple spiral when I wanted to. I set the rod up so that the line would just miss the blank under fu

Hi, I was wondering if it would be practical to build a two piece casting rod with micro guide running guides. That way when a conventional on top micro guide setup would be ideal for distance casting, just turn the simple spiral running guides up. That is what I want to try on my next rod, maybe even use the bumper guide if careful as a hook keeper. I am wanting to switch to two piece rods for

I have built two rods using the Fuji 4MM guides for running guides, one spinning and one simple spiral casting rod. The casting rod was 3C68MXF St. Croix that ended up doing everything I wanted it to do except flipping which I do not do much of anyway. The rod pitches great extremely accurate and cast very well. I used Fuji sic guides DF8, SF6 (bumper), SF5 (180) SF 4MM running guides. When I fir

I want to thank everyone for their advice and blank choices. Everyone gave me some greatly needed in site as to blank length, rod weight and that I may have to concede some things to achieve the main goal of this rod. Thank you again, have great day, Rich.

I want to thank everyone for their replies and advice. I will be away from my computer for a while. I have a sad event I must go to and I posted my topic for a distraction and information as well. You all cheered me up and kept my mind occupied this afternoon. Bill, I have unhidden my email address and would appreciate any tips to building a rod that could meet my criteria. Thank you all again f

Hi Bill, thank you for your reply. My thought process with a nine inch handle was it may still balance out the way I would like it to without adding weight to a finished 7 ft. rod. I made a nine inch handle out of the foam carbon fiber and I do not think I could get a rod over seven ft. to balance the way I would like if the rod was longer. I am not comfortable using a handle any longer than nin

Hi, I need some advice on what length and rating of blank would be best suited for a bait casting rod shore fishing for Bass. 10 to 14 lb line. If you had one rod to carry around shore fishing with to cover water quickly using the following lures, five inch flukes, jigs with craw trailer, chatter-baits and rattle traps, smaller jig swim-baits. 1/4 to 1/2 oz. weights. I am mainly looking for d

Hi Stan, I guess we where writing at the same time, thank you for your reply. Your reply was very reassuring and just what I hoped to hear. I think that 5mm guides will still leave room for a 6 wt. line, if I wanted to cast a larger fly. thank you very much for your reply, have a great day, Rich.

Hi Darrin, Thank you for your post it has a lot of great information worth thinking about. I was hoping to keep the rod components gunsmoke or black so they would match a carbon fly rod handle better. I have herd a lot of good things about your guides, someday I will give them a shot. Thank you again for your post, Rich.

Hi, I recently purchased a couple Dan Craft blanks and would appreciate suggestions on guide sizes for the FT903-4. I would like to use it with a SA WF 5wt. floating line to start with because that is what I have at the moment. I really like the no-knot connection from line to leader. I have ran the five weight line and leader through 4mm guides and it goes through nicely. I also ran the line

My most comfortable rod to fish with is simple spiral wrap built on a 3C68MXF Avid blank, Carbon fiber split grips, Fuji IPS seat, Fuji SIC guides DF8, SF6 Bumper, SF5 first 180, SF 4,s for running guides, Zirconi gold size 4 tip top. Daiwa Alpha reel with ceramic bearings. I use it with six pound P-Line even though it is rated 8-14 lb. Pretty much covers all my needs from 5" wacky rigged Se

For reel seats that are flush, straight against the handle there are a couple things that I have found work well. I like to use the foam as the reel seat arbor and handle also. I cut a small indentation behind the grip in the arbor area to use it to tighten down the carbon sleeve. I dry composite the sleeve over the foam. Place the carbon sleeve over the foam and align the weave making sure the

I would like to mention a little method that has worked for myself. I go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy a sheet of the 8'X4' wavy plastic porch roofing material. ( I forgot what it is called ) I cut the sheet into 8' long strips with a heavy duty scissors. I also buy a package of the cheap Velcro straps while I am at the store. Cut your PVC tube a couple inches longer than the rod and cut the

Mo, I think you could try a different method for aligning your guides. I like to find the choker point, take the spool off the reel and attach it to the reel seat. I then tie a piece of fishing line to the end of the spool shaft and run the line through the guides past the chocker guide. I then pull the line tight between the chocker guide and the spool shaft. Then I move the guides up or down th

Hi Leo, I am not really sure what kind of laser it is, it is mainly used for cutting, etching, acrylics and wood veneer. There is a company in Colorado that has the laser and they will do smaller jobs at a pretty reasonable price. I have known them for 30 years or more, I was always making something out of plastic resins or acrylic sheets. It would be great to have a laser like they have, if you

Hi Scott, thank you for your reply, I was away from my PC for a while and just had the chance to answer back. It sounds like I will eventually have to give the Thin Lam Pearl Veneer a try. I think I will wait a little while until I have a chance to read the upcoming article in RodMaker Magazine and also see if I can come up with a design that I think will look nice when it is laser cut out. Hi Scott, I am wondering if your Thin Lam or pearl veneer has been or is capable of being cut into shapes with a laser. Your product looks like really nice material that may look great inlaid into wood fishing rod handles.

Steve: Thank you for your help. I will have to have a look at that model tip. The American Tackle HFBT ceramic fly tip tops look like they would be a little light also for Bass rods. I have used them with good results on MXF casting, spinning rods and caught a few nice size Bass without a problem yet. I got to thinking that since the first guide after the tip is pretty close that there ma
