Man, this thread is a gem of info on the KR concept. I have a lot of things to try on my next couple builds. One of which is going to be larger running guides to accomodate larger leader line knots (which arent FG knots). David - Im referring to the last guide being the 5.5L on my NFC 722 build above. I go from the 5.5L straight to the running guides (per the spec Fuji laid out in that PDF). I

Hey David, Sorry for the confusion. I’m referring to the butt guide as guide 1 or “first guide”. So in my situation, building a rod with a16H-8H-6M-5.5L reduction train, I’m placing the 16H and 8H the same locations in both the 3+1 and the original KR 3 guide concepts. The two guides give me my cone angle. The taller 6M simply falls closer to the 8H guide because its are taller than the 5.5M

That’s good feedback David, and I may be doing something off the beaten path in regards to the 3+1 layout. My 1st and second guides don’t change between the KR 3 guide train and 3+1. I just keep the bullseye configuration and tweak the belly guide (sometimes) to get the offset ring Fuji says improves performance. As I said above, I’m using the KR calculator as a starting point on the first 2 guid

Here’s some anecdotes from my recent experience with this KR concept. The 3+1 KR still has the same cone angle (correct term?) as the original 3 reduction guide KR concept, its simply rounding the corner more where the last reduction guide (high frame belly guide) transitions to the running guides with a slightly less aggressive angle (think of it as adding a fillet to that sharp corner). This so

Thanks John, Sounds like I’m right there in the ballpark. I haven’t gone down the road of optimizing for weight yet. I’m pretty happy at 3.52oz with this MB733, but I’m sure I’ll get tired of building with VSS reel seats eventually. For now I’m loving them lol.

John - Do you know the weight of the 852S? I wasnt able to find it online. Interesting that they dont market that when most other rod manufacturers do. David - Im almost exactly that same weight on my 733. Its almost done drying, but I stopped it to get a weight lol. Im at 100g or 3.52oz. Excited to try it this weekend. The problem with this rod building thing is finishing the rod and needing

David- No problem. Glad you were able to get some use out of it. I just started a second build with the same design/components just changed the blank to an MB733. Looking forward to getting that one finished up. Chris- Appreciate the feedback. I agree that this is a better “true test” of the guide train. I’ll try some different configurations and report back later.

Hi All, Just to close out this thread since I started it, I thought I would report back with the build details. I decided to start with the SB724. In my opinion its good fit for a "Medium" power rod, but as others have stated, a bit on the "slow" side of Fast action. for what I plan to use this rod for (flukes and shaky head) I think it will work out quite well. Because

Thanks Kevin! I was just about to make this in solidworks, but you saved me the time! I’m working on a 3D file of a deflection tool that’s holds the blanks with cams for adjustability. I plan to 3D print this vs buying one. I’ll find a way to share that with those who are interested as well.

Thanks guys. Amazing how I’ve fished my entire life and I’ve never learned about the P.E. system. I think the guide trains I have laid out should work well with 8-10lb 8 strand braid. The 20klh train will suit the 15lb braid better it seems. Thanks for the info. On a side note, I got a call from the rod room to let me know I ordered handles that wouldn’t fit my reel seats (size 16 handles with

Thanks for all the input guys. Ive got 3 different blanks coming (X-rays: SB 722, 724, and MB 724)...If these dont meet my needs, then I'll look at other blank manufacturer options. One quick question, can someone decode the spec fuji puts in their "KR guide Concept" pdf when they say "Braid Line: up to 1.5 + leader(max 14lb)" .....Im wondering: what units is the "1.5

David- Thanks for the clarification. Didn’t know the tip was sized in terms of 64ths, learned something. I’ll wait for the blanks to arrive before I order the 5 tip tops, but thanks for the heads up. I figure having multiple sizes around will come in handy. For the guide bands, I will definitely try the mudhole option. I haven’t gotten that far yet, but what you mention seems to make sense for th

David - I wish I owned one already, but I guess that's how I ended up in this new hobby predicament! lol I live near herring lakes, and during alot of the year you can get offshore and target suspended fish with weightless (or slightly weighted) soft jerkbaits (5/16-3/8oz). So that's how I plan to use this rod, and its no secret that a lot of the successful anglers in my area also fish their weig

Hello All - This is my first post, as well as my first endeavor in rod building. I just pulled the trigger on orders to NFC and The Rod House to get all of the components for my first 3 rods. The blanks I chose were the (1) NFC SB-722 and (2) NFC SB-724. I bought two different blanks in an attempt to hit a perfect match on the NRX 852s. The NFC $75 dollar deal on X-ray blanks was tempting enough
