That's a sweet looking rod! Did you sand the blank before wrapping the guides? I just got 10 NFC blanks and was wondering how the wraps go with those ribs on some. They came with decals but I would like to put my name on the rods too so wondering what type and size of pen you did yours with. I write about as legibly as a doctor but can make it legible if I work at it. As it's a per

Thanks all. Sounds easy enough. I did see a video a while back with a guy pressing them against the ceiling but ours all have that popcorn stuff on them or are 10' high. I'll lay a towel on the floor to press against so I don't scratch the blanks and could call NFC about the ferrule wrap issue. Fingers crossed that they all pass as it would be a real PITA to have to ship any back south

What I've come up with using single foot guides near the top of the 10' 5wt rod still in progress is to get a coat of Flex Coat guide foot adhesive on the foot then press it on to the blank and secure it in place with some thin, plastic coated twist tie. The stuff that comes on a roll at garden shops. That glue really doesn't seem to stick well but that's OK as you want to be able to move it ar

My 10 NFC rod blanks finally showed up! I was told to inspect and load test them all just in case there is a problem with any as it might take me 2 or more years to use them all. Just wondering how best to do that.

I'll toss in my 2¢ here. I had never dealt with NFC before but got an email about their Pick 10 deal which stated in big letters that it would be 60 days or so to get the blanks and I was cool with that. I'm just getting back into rod building and had only built 3 or so rods almost 40 years ago so basically a new guy. When I called I spoke with Steve Pitcock and he spent about an hour with

Yummy yummy! Those would look nice on some of the 10 NFC blanks I have coming! Where do I sign up to be a field tester so I have an excuse to go fishing every day? Only 6 months to go before I'll be able to go fishing again so need them soon.

I do like using finer thread and being only 3 years behind you Richard I don't have the sharp eyes of my youth either. Standard size fingers but fairly severe arthritis that causes spasms fairly often when doing fussy things like wrapping or even tying my shoes. Time for velcro ones so I can become a meme I guess. ;) I was hunting all over for some sort of headset magnifiers that will work w

I'll probably get flamed for this but I put a guide on my old baitcaster just below the top guide on the butt section to turn it into a spiral wrap type and like it. I didn't want to mix up a tiny amount of the new Flex Coat Lite Formula epoxy I got and sit here rotating the rod by hand for 2 or 3 hours while it set up. I had just got a Solarez UV-Cure Fly-Tie Resin Roadie Kit. One of the 3 5m

Things sure have got a lot more technical than when I built my last fly rod almost 40 years ago. A 10' Powell 2-piece 7/8wt. Still fishes great IMHO and now almost have a PacBay Tradition II 10', 2-piece, 5wt ready to get out on the water for a trial run. I went with single foot guides all the way except for the stripping guide. I basically let Andy Snedden at Rod Builder Supplies out of Vict

Is everybody else but me using direct reels without a line leveller like my Abu Garcia baitcasting reel has? Not an issue at all with one of those.

I'm trying out the acid wrap idea on my 9' Kunnan bait rod. Just added a little taller single foot guide just below the last guide on the butt section and about 30° to the right as I crank left handed with an Ambassadeur 5001C I bought in 1984. Rod at the same time. I strung the rod with the extra guide and played around with where to put it so the line wouldn't touch the blank as it went to

Thanks for the reply and link Roger. Currently I have my 3 yo reading glasses and similarly aged distance glasses for driving. As we're surviving on my gov't pension and my wife's modest disability I've been waiting until I'm eligible for a new pair of reading glasses this Nov. from my Blue Cross medical. Cash poor, credit rich. I was thinking of getting bifocals this time but from prior

I used a different brand I got from my neighbour after trying Gorilla Indoor/Outdoor wood glue. The Gorilla glue dried really tough and I had to use little hobby files to wear it down first that took forever and popped a bunch of the filler out. I redid with the old glue and it filed off easy then I finished the sanding ending with 360grit and coating with U-40 cork sealant. The Elmer's you

"I guess I don’t get it. I always glue my reel seat and grip in place before I wrap my rods. Makes no difference if it’s a fly, casting, or spinning rod, the handle goes on first. Norm" I don't see how I could do that using the basic rod wrapper I have. With a better wrapper I could clamp the end of the reel seat in the chuck but I don't have that. Just that little V to lay the bu

Any thoughts about doing a spiral wrap for something even more unique and easier to fight the big ones with? I added a guide to my old Kunnan 9' bait rod to be able to flip the top section over so the guides are on the bottom of the blank when you're fishing. Casts just as well and no twisty torque when hauling in the big ones.

I just can't seem to get this forum to quote the way it should so doing it this way. "There are a number of magnifying visor/head band types of eyeglasses. Some come with different powered replaceable lens, and some come with a built-in light source. Many are quite inexpensive and they work well. Since you are a fly fisherman, I assume you have a fly tying bobbin. You can certainly use

"Do all your wrapping on the rod blank leaving the reel seat and grip hanging, just find a way to strap down the blank lightly so it stays in the wrapper and still turn easily. You can use tape with the area on the blank taped sticky to sticky, make a quick velcro held strap, thread wrapped over blank and anchored with tape or something, etc." I'm not quite certain on some of that bu

Hi all. I just received an order of 18 spools of ProWrap threads to build my fly rod with only to find it's a lot finer than I thought it would be and with my tired old eyes almost impossible to work with. I have a lighted magnifying lamp that is about 3x and wear reading glasses but it's still very hard to see what I'm doing. When I need to get both hands in to do things it's in the way so

I'm curious about the best way to remove a cork grip from the blank with the intent to keep it and the blank intact. Will epoxy soften with heat and if so, how best to apply the heat? I'm currently building a fly rod, my first in almost 40 years and my first time making my own custom cork grip. I bought some burnt, striped and regular corks but not certain if I'll be happy with it but really
