I have a customer that wants me to make him a jigging rod using a Black Hole Rod Blank 350 gram. Does anyone know about these blanks? Where to get them? How much they are? I have seen revolver rods at a local outfitter made with these blanks. They retail for approx. $360. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I use EVA foam. Comes in all different ID's and you cut about 1.5-2" long pc. and slip it over the tapered butt. Works for me it's reusable and your not wasting all that tape. Fish Hard, Captain Mike

I was told there is a lot of good info on the Federal Excise Tax (FET) on this forum. I tried the search typing in FET and Federal Excise Tax and came up empty. Can someone help me out? Captain Mike

I worked on flames this week-end between everything else. I call it my quest for fire. I am starting to relax and flames are actually starting to appear. I need to wait longer because the colors are fading into one another. Thanks again for the advice and when I get something I am proud of I will take a photo and post it.

I went home and tried my hand last night at marbling. WOW! I learned a lot and need a lot more practice. I made a mess at first, lots of fun. I did notice that the set up of the epoxy is a key factor. I looked at the pictures (Real Nice Job) and hopefully I will be there with more practice and instruction. Do you put clear epoxy on first wait and then add your colors on top of the clear, wa

I just finished a rod using the Madeira thread. I used U-40 Color Lock, two coats, than LS Supreme. On the butt wrap I noticed a small area where the epoxy would not adhere (approx. 1cm). After the first coat I just thought I missed a spot. I checked for 100% coverage on the second coat. When I came back later to check it the reaction had occurred. After the second coat the same area on the

Sounds like a great Idea. I need to get the most out of the ICRBE. However, I would be most interested in staying up on both races. How might I hook up with this NASCAR thread experience? Capt'n Mike

Emory- I tried the casting and did not notice any standing wave betwen the reel and the first guide. I never thought of that ,but I'll be looking for that from now on. I would love to do the spiral thing, however this rod is for someones Dad and he's not going for the spiral. I have another rod I'm doing for live baiting King Fish that I'm going to do the spiral wrap on. Anyway, Mike the fi

Wow, I need to do some more reading. I thought the idea was to keep the line off the rod while fighting a large monster. I never thought about the deflection of the rod during casting. I was casting a 14 oz jig aprox. 40-50' with no problem. If I move the stripping guide out another couple of inches and spread everthing out I can get down to 9 guides. I'll try that tonight and let ya'll kno

Tom, I tried out the static guide placement. The rod blank is a 7' Med and the reel is a Phlueger Trion LP Baitcast. I started out with the stripping guide (20) at 18" from the face of the reel and then followed your directions. When all said and done I ended up with 13 guides total. (most are 6mm) Lot of guides. Does this sound about right? Thanks, Mike

I have been applying epoxy with a spatchula and have not had to much trouble with bubbles. I have been using a heat gun to control the few bubbles that do show up with good results. Do you think I may have over heated? The sparkles sure look like tiny bubbles to me. I'm getting close to finishing another rod with thread that requires CP. I will wait longer on the drying time. Being new to the rod making world I need some advice on use of color preserver. On a repair over the week-end when I applied epoxy to a wrap that I had applied color preserver to approximatley 3-4 hrs earlier I had bubbles that looked like they were coming from under the wrap. Just looking at the finish with the naked eye the thread looked metal flake. When looking under the magnifying light y

At the Rod Show I was told about locking single foot guides to the rod blank with a figure 8 wrap. Tom mentioned to me that the instructions are in one of the issues of Rod Builder Mag. Can any one tell me what issue that is or were I can find instructions on this wrapping technique? Thanks Mike Edmonds
