I have been viewing the photos on this forum and would love to try a few new things. One of the things I would like to try is a resin casting with a fly in it in the faux ivory of a grip. My question is, what keeps the resin casting from just falling off? Is there a recessed angle milled into the ivory, or does the resin just fuse together with the faux ivory from the chemical reaction. Thanks

I couldn't find anyone on the list on the left there that has some imitation ivory. I swear I saw a source in a back issue of RM magazine once, but could not find it anymore. Can someone direct me on where to go for this? On another note, I see in Terry Henson's photos where he has done some flies cast into ivory on grips. The color of the fill is very clear. Are some resins better than others fo

What is the best glue for laminating stabilized woods together for a grip. A Titebond II, or an epoxy.

I did see their products, but I didn't see anything larger than the 7/8" - 1" squares. I am going to do a halibut rod and the grip diameter would be larger than the 1" square blocks.

I am looking for a source on stabilized wood. Everything I have found thus far is mostly for knife builders, and is too small of pieces for rod brips.

please excuse my ignorance. 90 degrees even on a more stout rod? I purchased an AXGC66MH from American Tackle for the blank I will be using. Being new I don't know much yet but 90 degrees seems like it would be hard to flex that far without breaking or damaging the blank.

I just read Toms article from Rodmaker V2 #5 "Guide spacing grid" and have a question. I understood most of the article except I don't know what 90% butt to tip angle means. Do you mark the blank at 90% from tip to butt and when that section starts to flex you are there? And if this is the case how much flex is enough. Or is it something else. I enjoyed the article a great deal and thin

I now have a whopping 2 rods under my belt and want to make a foray into a custom grip with a combination of wood, some black and white trim bands (maybe in checkerboard) and I am thinking a band of black EVA or other foam a bit larger than my hand width where I will be holding the rod for comfort while reeling in halibut. I recently purchased a lathe and am looking forward to experimenting.

I will be finishing up the current project soon and would like to hear from the experts on what would make a good halibut rod. It will mainly be used for the chickens, but there could be some in the area up to maybe 70 pounds. I am also thinking of trying the Roberts wrap with that one. This will only be my third rod so take that into consideration. I have a new mid sized wood lathe that I am thi

Hi Tom, I am trying to order multiple things from the RodMaker magazine site over there <-------- on the left, and every time I try to add a second item to my cart it erases whatever I had in there first. Do I need to have several seperate orders? or am I just an inept idiot doing the wrong thing (according the the spousal unit, I do this frequently). Sorry if I'm posting this

I am a recent subscriber to RodMaker magazine. In my current issue I see mention of an article on how to do scrimshaw, which issue will I find the article in.

I am a newbie to rod building, I am in the middle of just my second build now. But being that I do enjoy it I want to do several more. And being the tool junky that I am, I just purchased a new wood lathe from Acid Rod on the left over there. Here's my question, I have never used a wood lathe before, is there a book or video or two you guys can recommend that would give me some good detail for tu

I am going to build a rod for my father (only my second rod so far). The rod blank that I have is a Sage SA-4120, the reel is an Islander MR-3, which is a gold color. Are there any high quality gold colored guides, preferrably with a ceramic insert, and gold colored reel seats? On another note, I am going to try to copy a guide wrap from a post by Michael Joyce from 6/14/06. Would you all sugges

I am a newbie so I might be doing things incorectly. I had this problem, and to fix it I taped each end so as not to scratch the rod and used an extremely fine emery board purchased from a local drugstore to sand down to level then re-epoxied.

I have thus far only built 1 rod. It was pretty basic just added a damsel weave as an extra. Now I want to learn how to do the decorative butt wraps. I learn much better if I have visuals. Can someone recommend a dvd that would explain it in detail. Thanks, Jeff

After pouring through the photo galleries I have decided that I would like to try my hand at doing a closed butt wrap with a weave overlay like in Jim Kastorf's gallery. I have purchased Doc Ski's dvd and have done a couple of weaves and love doing that but now I need to know what dvd or book to purchase to learn how to do the closed wrapping style ( haven't even tried open yet, so I don't know w

Thank you everyone for your responses. This has been my first undertaking of rod building, and I have enjoyed it very much. I find it very relaxing from a mental standpoint, does that make me a mental case? could be. Thank you, Jim Upton for the web address, I found a couple salmon designs there but I am unsure by the color scheme if it is the right one. I also saw that some of

Does anyone know if a website exists that shows the full spectrum of Doc Ski's designs? I recently purchased one of his designs from a local retailer, but there was no picture of what it will look like upon completion. The design was titled "salmon deluxe" has any of you done or heard of this design and have photos of it? I would like to see it before spending all that time on the proje
