First birch bark. I am pleased with how it turned out. A little heavier than cork, but I saved some wt with a cork reel seat. Small grip on a 3/4 wt.

Phil, I built the Forecast (blue)13 foot 7/8 lkit ast year. The Forecast is a bit slower, med fast, than the Rainshadow. Which is good for me as I am continuing to learn with it, and I like to feel it load. I think you will like either one of the blanks from Batson and the complete kit that I got was a really good value. Looks sharp with Mettalic Blue wraps... Good luck with whatever you de

BT-SB822.5 is the blank I am building. It is a gift to my brother for paying the rental fee for our trip to Dale Hollow...The rod will be for drop shot fishing, but he/I do agree we want some casting performance out of it as apposed to just dropping it off the side of the boat. I have turned my own 11.5 inch Tennesse grip so the handle is a little different than what has been suggested. All y

This is a 6 foot 10 inch Spinning rod... Batson site has 7 guides with the first starting at 4.5 inches, 9.5, 15, 21, 28, 35.5, 44 in...I have made a lot of fly rods that are "fast" action and others with soft tips and I have never gone over 4 inches from the tip. I have used new concept once before on a genral purpose 7ft spinning rod and I liked the results...and I will static te

I am building on a Rainshadow drop shot rod. It has an extra fast action...Should I go with a total of 7 guides or even 8? I plan on static test and using New Concept guide placement...I just want to be sure I plan on for the very soft tip. Any thoughts are appreciated, as I mostly build fly rods. This is only the 3rd spinning rod I have attempted... Thanks, Jeff

Shawn, I'm in the same situation. I plan on building a rod for a trip to Dale Hollow in TN. Last year, I built a 7 footer on a blank from a sponser on the left and was very happy with it. This year I'm building for my brother as a thank you gift who is going to pay for my lodging. I'm thinking of the Forecast 6'10" 6-14lb line and is 1.95 oz. Its extra fast action and is lighter that

Just a real quick question. I am at the last step. I am about to finish the guide wraps. The contrast threads have been finished and the top wrap is done and the pull out thread has been pulled. I am using Black(nylon) and Gold metallic under wrap. Top wrap is black (nylon). I used CP on the underwrap, and my question is do I use CP for the top wrap??? My butt wrap turned out good if a lit

Thanks to everyone...I will definately check out those tutorials. I have used Tru-Oil on some gun stock refinish jobs, and on some Birch bark & cork grips (with good results), but I am looking to try something else. By the way, I hope to someday have an actual wood lathe, but for now, my hand-me-down drill press will have to do the job. Takes a little longer to do and I have to be very

I have just finished turning my first wood reel seat. Burled/Spaulted Maple. My question is what product should I use to preserve or waterproof it? I am torn on darkening with stain or spar varnish, or using something clear like Permagloss. It is going on a multi piece 6wt. The blank is a nice rootbeer color I puchased from one of the vendors on the left. Also any color suggestions? Coppe

Thanks, for all of the replies. It does seem like the reel has a shallow up-sweep. I debated with myself about the number of guides to use, but I thought I would try to keep it light. I am going to look at it agian tonight and see. I may go ahead and move the first guide back and go to a 25mm and re-space. Currently its a 20,16,10,6,6,6,6,TT. Thanks again, JH p.s. as a side note, I k

I have been building mostly fly rods. This is my first spinning rod for use on a trip to TN. Its a 7' med power 8-12lb fast action spinning rod with a hand turned TN grip. I used the New concept guide spacing. Because of the grip, the reel mounts further from the blank, my intersect point is a little farther down the blank, at 55 3/4" . Spacing looks like this (from spool) 24 3/4, 37

Has anybody heard of ALL PRO RODS? I am more familiar with fly rods, but I got a chance to do some bass fishing in TN and used some of these rods. Nice 7 footers and a Tennesee grip. I liked the grip, and they seemed nice and light in the hand. Do they sell blanks?

I have read many posts describing this condition, and I thought the need to add my comments. I am hooked!!! Like a bucketmouthed bass swollowing a jerkbait whole. Like a 25 pound King Salmon slamming size 4 streamer out of pure aggression. Like a big brown slurping up a nightcrawler drifted deep in a hole. I say HOOKED! I have finished 3 fly rods and reconditioned 2 casting rods a

Thanks Tom. After I read the articles on the Common Cents approach I couldn't wait to test all of my rods, some custom, some factory. I did all of them exactly the same. This has tought me a lot and allowed me to express some of what I already knew by feel. Thanks again to all the great information, I can't wait to start my next project. Jeff Hanlon

My question, is what if any soes rod spine play into the ccs data? I know spine gets debated quite heavily. But the instructions tell you to have guides up when doing the test. Depending on whether you placed your guides along the spine or on the opisite side, would that translate into a noticeable difference? Could it be the difference between a 4.8or a 5.15 score on a tested "5wt&quo

I don't have a ton of expirience, but I like the more tanslucent looking wrap. Would it look OK if I did not use CP? Would the thread be more translucent and just transition from brown to dk brown, to very dk brown blank? Maybe your suggestion of CP is right, Thanks, Joe JH

Maybe I was not very clear. I am looking for a two tone affect under a two foot casting guide. Do I finish over the bottom thread field or can I just go ahead and wrap the guide on and finish over the whole thing? Thanks, JH

First, thank you to all on this forum. With your great information, and a book by Art Scheck, I have completed my first fly rod. Forecast 8'6" 5wt. My question is this: I have removed damaged guides from two casting rods. I cleaned up the blank as best I can. There are some blemishes that I wish to hide. I am going to mount the new guides on top of an under wrap. One is a dark
