same equipment as original, think you may be right about not noticing it before
do you think the tip of the rod got softer?
i know that there a probably about a million or more rods built with the Bigfoot guides so they should not be the problem
I was thinking about re wrapping the rod with the winthrop guides as the frames appear to be wider

I am having a problem with some of my rods
These are 80lb chair rods that we have had for 10 years or so..with Shimano Tiagra 80Ws
while setting the drag recently there was an area of the nylon that was being consistently damaged
what I noticed was that if the tip of the rod was flexed left or right the nylon would rub on the stripper guide
it may also be possible that it was rubbing on

Bob, I am in Trinidad in the Caribbean.
Started building rods couple years ago, my 3rd rod I spiral wrapped...the guy I wrapped it for is a charter captain and he has been using it for the last 1 1/2 years.
He has caught numerous fish with it including big Tarpon in the 180-220lb range, with some fights going over 2 hours.
The only problem he has with the rod is that he can't get to use

It is a simple question....I know it works for stand up fishing
But,
Does it make any sense to spiral wrap a rod for offshore trolling when you will be fighting a fish using a chair and bucket harness?
I am talking about fishing for Billfish

Thank you again Mike
If the epoxy is solely resposible for protecting the thread then perhaps the CC will work as they have become more durable and seem to have more UV protection than the epoxy..
Again thank you to all that have responded that is what makes this forum so great

Thanks Mike
I think that the application was as fault not the product
I am using LS supreme,
the rod is level, using a spatula
1st rod - too much epoxy, creating high and low areas on the wrap
2nd rod- less epoxy not as bad
Used a brush this morning on the wraps much happier with the results. I can't coat the wraps with one coat, how many coats or layers of epoxy can be used?

OK so am i to understand that the epoxy is not necessary?
Newbie to rod building so I do not want to start off on the wrong foot
I am only building salt water 30lb to 80lb trolling rods so far.
first two rods the epoxy came out terrible .. 1-very uneven......2-too thin
I would try the clear coat route if it is a viable way to cover the threads and possibly blanks
The epoxy must be doing s

I have a potential customer who is an automotive/marine painter. He is trying to convince me not to use epoxy on the threads. He will finish it with an automotive clear coat. He says the epoxy is not necessary and it yellows after time the clear coat will not yellow and is just as durable.
Any thoughts on this proposition??

Yes, I have done searches but would still like input.
I like the action of stand up rods, however prefer the aluminum butts on the rods.
Now here we go, the stand up blank normally goes through the reel seat, slick butt or hypalon to the gimbal. All of that bottom section epoxied together so that it is stiff and unmoving. Most of the action in these blanks are in the top 1/3 and it may onl
