Based on Steve's original question I think he may have used a sticker instead of an actual decal, this based on the fact he said he was able to remove the "decal" and put it back on the paper. I personally have never had a problem with Micro-Set or Micro-Sol with any finish, including Flex-Coat (unthinned), although I now use Thread Master. I think there may be a compatibility issue wit

Tim, the TruOil isn't just on the surface, it penetrates to become part of the cork. I never use more than 1 coat because the little bit that stays on the surface will become glossier with each application. David

I use Tru-Oil myself, I apply it and then wipe off any excess. That way I get no shine at all. David

Well, looks like more do it than not. I think I'll give a shot. If so many of you are having no problems with the process I shouldn't either. Thanks for all the replies, David Bethlehem, GA

Charlie, you're probably right when you put it that way. It's not really worth the risk. Oh well. Thanks, David

I am thinking of changing over to high quality non-disposable brushes for applying finish. Does using brush cleaner cause any problems with the finish, like fish eyes, etc.? Thanks, David

From reading here it seems to be difficult keeping the stuff fresh after opening. At one time I built models professionally and used this tip to keep volatile Floquil paint fresh and now it's habit on anything like paint. I have a bottle of Perma Gloss I first opened in February, have opened it 4-5 times since, and it's still factory fesh. That's in spite of it being very humid here in Georgia

I've always used the 12cc FlexCoat syringes for measuring my finish by pulling the plunger completely out and pouring the finish into the syringe from a yorker cap on the bottle. I replace the syringes on a regular basis because I always eventually cross contaminate the syringes or otherwise create a problem for myself. The latest batch of FlexCoat syringes I received are the newer all plastic

A question for those more knowledgeable than I... Is there a significant chance that a blank could be shipped reasonably straight to begin with and then acquire a warp from being cooked in a FedEx truck for a couple of days? Upon reflection, and it may very well be pure circumstance, I simply haven't run into this problem very often in the cooler months. Could it be??? Just a thought... My ori

Tom McNamara of Mud Hole apparently wrote his post above as I was typing my last post. I applaud him for publicly addressing this matter. The problem arose because I was told FLATLY on the phone that I WOULD be charged the 10% restocking fee PERIOD even though I had explained that the blanks were simply too crooked for me to in good conscience try to pass off to my customers. Mr. McNamara's po

Andy, you're a class act! The next time I order blanks I'll be talking to you. I've been curious about those CTS blanks anyway, and you just pulled me off the fence. What bugs me is that if you can maintain a viable business and still offer that kind of customer service why can't some others? Tom, I didn't ask for replacements because I was afraid of just getting more of the same. I honestly t

There's plenty of ready made pistol grips out there but does anyone know of a source for some in a better than average grade cork? Thanks, David

I just returned some very crooked blanks to one of the sponsors who is charging me a 10% restocking fee even though the blanks were unusable as far as I'm concerned. It's hard to build a rod the customer will accept if the blank is crooked in 2, and in 1 case, 3 different planes. I never expect perfectly straight blanks but send me something I can work with! Add in return shipping and it gets exp

I've built several for customers and a couple for myself. They aren't the absolutest lightest blanks out there but they're not excessively heavy either. All those customers and I love the rods built on the Matrix blanks, in fact my favorite worm rod is built on a Matrix 783 blank and I couldn't ask for a better worming rod, very sensitive. Factor in the reasonable cost and you can't go wrong.

Thanks for the replies. I was wanting to remove the finish at a customer's request. He liked the carbon fiber look of the scrim but didn't like the green. I was just amazed because I've never seen anything related to finishes that laquer thinner wouldn't soften. Thanks, David

I just tried to remove the gloss green finish on a Matrix blank with lacquer thinner and the finish wasn't affected AT ALL! Just curious, but does anyone have any idea what finish AmTak uses on these blanks? It's some tough stuff... Thanks, David

Just curious what you guys are using to finish off the top of the reel seat when you don't use a foregrip( I.E. the Kistler style). I've been using the typical black rubber/vinyl winding checks but can't help but wonder how they will hold up after a few years exposed to UV rays. Thanks, David

Thread Master for me too. It's working properties are very similar to Flex Coat but it's the super water clear clarity that swings my vote. David

I'm not a golfer myself but I was recently steered to a type of epoxy glue called "high impact shafting epoxy". It's used for building / repairing golf clubs. Being of the old school I ordered some of the 24 hour variety. Having put it through it's paces I've got to say this stuff is amazing! I found it to be particularly useful when using fiberglass mesh bushings under reel seats (I
