Thats absolutely amazing. So, the rods that I've been finding that are completed, are most likely made in China, and then the blanks (if they're really the same blank used in the completed rod), are also probably made in China. If I am thinking correctly on the matter. I'm going to have to save, to get a decent blank or two. But I don't think it would be a bad idea to buy a couple of cheap ones,

That is a very good point given and completely taken. I honestly didn't think about those factors. It leads me to another question though. What if, the blanks are the same, and the bare blank still costs more? I love this knowledge that I can absorb and pass on to the generation under me, or even others that are around me in general. ????

That sir, I can absolutely agree with. But does that mean the manufacturer is using an inferior in their completed rod, and selling a better quality bare blank?

Never said that Mr. Baylor. Just pointing out that I've been seeing completed rods, that cost less than blanks. But also, why would they charge less for a completed rod, than a blank? Is it because the blank in the completed rod inferior, compared to the bare blank they're selling? All of this is out of curiosity and to decrease my ignorance.

If anything, Mr. Miller is onto something. Even though he mention the 2 piece rods, what if I were to use three of those crappie telerods? They're only like, $10-15 each, and not really hard to find the spine in each section. Plus, they would be more than enough for me to make multiple sections. Its basically the same as you both have suggested, but also knowing that the material is going to actu

That is very interesting. I'm surely going to add that to my R&D for this project. Thank you Mr. Miller.

So here's the next question. As I've been looking at blanks for the past couple of weeks, every... single... day..., multiple times each day; I've yet to find any manufacturer that is willing to sell cosmetic blems, or even entertain the idea of selling cosmetic blems. Anyone know of a reliable source that would sell some blanks of that nature? I know there's many manufacturers out there that mak

I most certainly will. I have so say, that many others are like me, where the wallet only allows so much at one time. For the meantime, I'm goin to do my research and find blanks, gather my other resources, and design my plan. This is going to be fun and I have faith that it will turn out the way I need it to. Thank you for all the support. You'll definitely be hearing from me in other threads, a

I'm shooting for around a 7'(+/-6") 3-5wt, 7-10 section with up to 10 guides including the stripping guide. I prefer cork for the handle and was thinking of using wine corks, but seen how inexpensive the cork rings actually are. So going with those. I have a few busted rods that I'm going to salvage some parts from, like the reel seat and possibly a handle if I can manage to ream out the exi

There is a way where I'd only have to use maybe 3 blanks. Its about where you cut on each blank, and how much of the butt from the smaller section must remain inside the bigger section. I honestly don't think its going to be too hard; just time consuming. I'm gonna try to find some blanks. If I spend $60 on blanks, get it right, and maybe another $40 on the rest of it, then I'm actually in good s

That is a very good point Mr. Belote. With the proper placement of the guides, and the proper amount of them, the pressure from the fight will be more evenly displaced, as well as the pressure from the casting. I'm probably going to have to buy multiple blanks, and just do my own cut and fit with them. Noting where the spine is on each blank, whilst marking it, so it does not become lost in const

I think the closest to the cabela's pan fish rod would have to be an Amazon rod. They're all over the place. I mean, Zebco makes a one for about $20, but it is super stiff for a glass/graphite composite rod. It's rather messed up, isn't it Mr. Smith? The cost seems a bit steep, whether just for the blank, or for the completed rod. Granted on a completed rod, I see the total cost to make it. Ma

There are plenty of completed rods that cost less than the blanks do. I've been pricing, and have seen companies sell blanks for up to $80 more than completed rods. Not saying the manufacturer sells them for more, even though most manufacturers won't sell direct to a customer. All of this is also my experience so far, as I am new to rod building. Hey Mr. Belote, is that repurposed panfish rod

I do have another question that has been erking me for a bit now, that goes along with my project. Why do blanks cost more than a completed rod, when we're the ones finishing the rod, and not the manufacturer?

Tossing this out there for ya as well. The control knobs of an old cooking range work well if you're needing a type of control switch. They have a nice even increase and decrease in current pass-through as well. Just because they're being used for AC doesn't meant that you can't use them for DC, if you're using a remote power source (battery).

That is a wonderful idea on the case. I'm looking for something along the lines of 36"x20"x14". I'm going for the 30lbs of sh*t in a 3lbs bag scenario. I know, its a long shot, but hey, I gotta try. Hoping to have the lid hold my rods, and for the reels that I have for my 2 & 3 piece, would fit in compartments in the bottom, along with my box of flies, leaders, tippet, net, wad

There is actually one manufacturer that has one, Kastking. But their setup is expensive for my wallet at the moment. They call it Kastking Soloscopic. I mean, I've spent that kind of money on rods alone. Paired them with a balanced reel and tossed a couple of different lines on to find the liking of my choice, but they never really fished the way I wanted them to. I'm afraid that the Kastking wil

Thank you! I currently only have one telerod, and it's an Eagle Claw Pack-It fly rod combo. It cost me $20 and I wish I would've bought the other 2 that were on the shelf. Granted I know they were cheap, but for the type of fish, and where I'm using it, it works really well. I can get about 60 (+/- 10) feet of line out with the rod only being a 6'6" 3wt, balancing it with 3wt line and a size

Hey Y'all. Since I'm new and I know people can be overly harsh whilst being blunt (I like people being blunt), I hope people will keep their replies to a dull level of harshness. I love my fly rods. I love fishing in general, but fly fishing is what I have the most fun with. My rods are beginning to become a pain to pack away, and its hard to find a proper case at a reasonable price. There
