Excellent points, David. I bass fish every now and then and have found that the only significant difference is the hook set. Thanks for the advice. I'm looking forward to getting started. Lyle, Morehead City NC

Thanks Robert, I decided to get my feet wet by getting a DIY kit from Mudhole and it should be here in a few days. I've been reading posts and going through the library on this site as well. I'm grateful that there are so many people on here who are willing to offer advice and guidance. Lyle, Morehead City, NC

I ordered a DIY kit from Mudhole so I'll be able to jump in soon. I have an old rod that's in terrible shape so that's what I plan on practicing with.

I am an inshore, saltwater fisherman so I target Trout, Redfish, Flounder, and Strippers. I use mostly light rods with light spinning gear and I want to build rods for myself, family and friends. I really have no ambitions, at this point, of trying to market or sell them. I look at it as simply an extension of my love for fishing. Lyle, Morehead City NC

Thanks for all the great advice, Russ! I'm definitely going to heed your advice and take it slowly. I have an old ugly stick that I think I'm going to strip down and practice with. Lyle, Morehead City NC

I have zero rod building experience and am thinking of going with a starter kit from Mudhole or similar company. Any suggestions on how to get started would be greatly appreciated.
