I am fairly new to building rods. I have read several articles on rod building and question the need for the under wrap. The rod is a SC2 7' 2 piece 10-20lb 1/2 - 1 1/2. I dont mind doing the under wrap just wondering if it is necessary or just more weight, also would I use finish on the under wraps or not.

I turn cocobolo a lot when making pens and I would also recommend the CA as a finish. I have pens a couple years old that still look really good for the abuse they have taken.

Well Milton I dont actually have a website I've been collecting info from alot of different sources. The main source is from the penturners.org website. There is alot of people that are using plexiglass dissolved in acetone then soak the wood in the mixture and put in a vacuum. What would be a good fly rod for use in both fresh and saltwater. The rod would be used mainly for saltwater. Someone had mentioned a 8wt rod would work probably the best for both applications.

When static testing a casting rod would have the blank oriented for the eyes on top or on the bottom. It seems that it is easier for the eyes to follow the arc on the bottom than the top.
